I have always had a fascination with light and shadow.  In my latest work titled “Violet Blue” I have used aqua as light and violet blues as shadow to create depth and dimension.  It has a fluidity as well that evokes a sense of watery movement.  Sit back for a moment and relax your eyes and just let your vision get absorbed into the light….feel the calm energy that fills your mind….

I recently read an article that explained that Black Friday was just hype.  That the so called “deals” at department stores and bricks and mortar retailers were really just psychological number games.  People get caught up in the frenzy of the sale and totally forget to analyze whether they are actually saving anything.  To me, even if there were real deals, there is no way I’d risk my life (people get trampled!) or that much of my time and energy just to save a few bucks.  Have you seen the parking lots at malls on the day after Thanksgiving?  I personally have better things to do with my time. 🙂

Seriously…..stay safe….stay home and support hard working self-representing artisans.  Thank you and happy shopping!

How To Not Get Scammed…

SCAMS!! A recent FAA scam produced the advice for us to not to put our emails online anywhere. While this will definitely reduce the amount of scam/spam emails you get, it is not going to work for those of us who want to sell originals and commissions.

Emails were created so people could contact you on the Internet. I would not sell originals and commissions if I did not post it online. I have had my email posted everywhere for over 10 years and I have never gotten scammed. Have I gotten scam emails? ALL OF THE TIME…many a day!! Instead of saying do not post your emails anywhere which has been vital to my sales…I’d say to be smart about the emails you answer.

*First of all just my quick 2 cents…rarely is anything really “urgent”…that is your first clue to be cautious. Also look for poor grammar and misspelled words.

*Secondly, NEVER click on a link requesting personal information. If it appears to be from one of your sites. You open a new window and go to your account and log in. From there EVERY site I am on sends me notifications through the site when I need to do something too….FAA does it….when I log in, if there is something new like Designerprints.com they let me know as soon as I log in.

*Lastly…..Your sites do send emails with links and sometimes they even tell you you need to update something like a credit card (happened to me with Amazon)…but NEVER click on a link through email to do it…Always open a new window and log into your account. If in doubt…if you ever find yourself being asked for personal information…close the window and go ASK the source..in this case FAA and they will tell you if it is a scam.

If you follow the above, you will not be scammed and you can keep your email wherever you want it. My email probably appears easily over 10,000 times all over the net and I’ve never been scammed.

This link can be VERY helpful to those who worry about being scammed. Life isn’t about worrying, hiding and missing out just to play it safe…it’s about being present and available but using good sense.

Thank You…

Untitled-1

If the only prayer you ever say in your entire life is thank you, it will be enough.

Meister Eckhart

This is one of my favorite prayers and I say it first thing every morning when I awaken and last thing before I go to sleep.  I am truly grateful for my life.  I have had a hard one, but I have always had gratitude in my moments of prayer.  I understand that my presence here is a gift from the Universe. Challenges are what allow me to see all of the good in my life with absolute clarity.  Right now I have so much love, health, friendship and success that I can see no other way to live it but in gratitude.  I still struggle at times, but even in the darkest hours there is always something to be thankful for.  Happy Thanksgiving!

When was the last time you met someone who was really charming?  You know the type. Someone who has an open, friendly and contagious smile.  A person who has a real way with words and could convince you that just about anything was absolutely wonderful simply because they believe it is!  I am talking about the genuine type and not the sleazy car salesperson who is trying to be charming just to sell you a car.  Do you even know someone like this?  Are you sure?  You may not be able to know the motives of people, but look deep into my new painting and be “charmed”……be sure…..

3 P’s – The Art Of Selling Art

If you are an artist or photographer who has a dream of making a career out of your craft, you will need three things:  practice, promotion and patience.  And you will need them exactly in that order.

Practice means that you will be painting a lot of paintings.  Many will be thrown right in the trash because they just didn’t work out.  Photographers will be taking many photos in a single shoot only to find that none of them work or if you are lucky one is good enough to list for sale.  You will try new things that will either be total flops or lead you to something really cool and interesting.  You will invest money that seemingly never pays off.  These days I sell about 5 prints a day on average from the various POD sites I am on and about 2 originals per week. The majority of what I am selling now is work I have created in the last year.  Since I have been selling my art professionally for over 10 years this means that I am a much better artist today than I was back then.  I have removed 100’s of images from my portfolios because as I practice and improve, I realize they aren’t my best work anymore.  If you have just started creating photography or any kind of artwork within the last 2 years, I guarantee you that you need a lot more practice before your work will sell really well.  If you look at the famous creatives most of them never sold early work while they were producing it and many never made a dime from it at all…money was only made after they were dead.  In the Internet age we have so many opportunities that they never had.  So keep creating regularly.  The more you produce the better you will become and eventually sales will start rolling in.  Babies do not come out walking and neither do artists.  We crawl first.

While you are busy perfecting your art, there is a key ingredient to success that cannot be overlooked.  Much like creatives of yesteryear we have to have someone believe in us and “get us out there” in order for our work to sell.  For them it was luck and chance by being discovered by the right person at the right time.  These days that someone is ourselves.  You must believe in your work and be willing to share it with the World.  Social Media provides us with instant access to millions of people from the comfort of our own studio computer, laptop or phone.  We can connect to a mind boggling amount of followers with a few clicks.  As an artist or photographer who lists on online galleries, if you are not using ALL of the FREE social media sites available to us, you are completely missing the boat.  This post would be way too long for me to delve into all of the ins and outs of Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Pinterest, StumbleUpon, etc. but there are tons of free resources online to get you started.  Check out the link to my social media in my blog and see what I am doing.

Once you have the discipline to create new work on a regular basis and you are willing to put in some hard work promoting yourself what you are left with is time. It takes time to become successful.  Patience will be your best friend for awhile.  A year ago today I was only selling about 1 print a week and 2 years ago only 1 a month!  Now it is 5 a day!  But that did not happen overnight.  It took about 2 years to get moved up in searches and it took about 6 more months of creating new and better art than I was used to producing and HEAVY social media promoting to see the magic start.  And I am still learning and improving myself.

Not everyone is cut out for the kind of hard work and perseverance that an art career requires. But if you can commit to at least 3 years of constant creativity and as much promotion as time will allow, you can definitely find your market and succeed!

Like most artists, I am most happy when I am creating.  When it comes to the selling part it takes a great mental effort to “enjoy” the process.  It is tedious and monotonous to do computer work. Listing and promoting.  Listing and promoting.  Answering emails.  Ordering supplies.  If only a wealthy patron would sponsor me so all I had to do was paint and create all day without even considering the business of selling art.  While I am still waiting for that fantasy to come true, I soothe myself with those moments of utter jubilant joy when I can escape the dirty work and just create.  O.k., painting is dirty too, but a good kind of dirty. 😉

Please enjoy my latest painting titled “Jubilee”.  It was a real treat to create!

I will be busy this week with family and Thanksgiving festivities….went down south today to spend some time with relatives who flew in from Colorado….It was a little chilly for a beach day, but this little girl was determined to enjoy herself.  She was so caught up in the simple joy of digging in the sand when her parents graciously let me take a few quick snaps….aaaahhhhh I remember….

Sometimes you just gotta get fresh!  I have been promoting past works heavily lately for the Holiday season and I have been painting custom work based on much older pieces.  I love working with all of my creations, but sometimes I really need to create something new.  After avoiding yellow for many years due to emotional reasons, I have found that it is showing up a lot lately.  Something really bad happened to me that I used to associate with the color, so it is refreshing to see my soul embracing this light and life giving hue.  Today I offer you some fresh lemons….I can almost smell them….
