You never go back……..That’s what they say. For me, that has been true when it comes to black dogs. Great Danes in particular. When I was a little girl growing up in a dysfunctional home filled with abuse there was a constant in my life that brought me comfort. During the worst of times, I would dream of a big black dog that would soothe me and make me feel protected. We never had Great Danes and we never had a black dog. It wasn’t until I was in my early 30’s that I met my husband who had two of these gentle giants and one happened to be black. It took her awhile because she had been abused too, but once she bonded to me we were thick as thieves….She lived to be 12 which is ancient for any large breed dog. I believe she lived so long because she knew I needed her to help me heal. And heal I did. Ever since she passed, I’ve always wanted to have a black dog in my life. We adopted another, but he passed too. And now we have “Lumin”…..my third black Great Dane…..Nope I am not going back. 😉
This is a beautiful heartfelt post Sharon. I can relate really well. 🙂
