The secret to creativity is knowing how to hide your sources.
Albert Einstein
Every few days I open an email from another artist asking me “how did you do that?” They want to know my techniques, my materials and…if I am not too busy…some personal instruction. I have never felt an obligation to share my secrets with others. To me the joy and fun of creating is to explore…try unusual things….find your art. Copying may be the greatest form of flattery, but somehow I never feel flattered when I see someone attempting to duplicate my work. It’s almost like seeing your husband with another woman. I feel violated. I developed my styles the hard way….by trial and error. I have spent many years marketing myself and building a strong following. My work is branded well and people recognize it as mine. So if you want to know my secret…it’s this….be your own artist….find your own voice….spend some money on a variety of materials and explore what is inside you. Be inspired by others if you must, but always be original. Like the quote above says “hide” your sources. Make your inspired work so much your own that it will not be identified as someone else’s. 🙂

Pingback: Pssst….Let Me Tell You a Secret | merlinspielen
I constantly emailed this blog post page to all
my friends, because if like to read it afterward my
contacts will too.
Spot on with this write-up, I honestly believe that this web site needs a great
deal more attention. I’ll probably be back again to read more, thanks for the advice!
I am really impressed with your writing skills as well as with
the layout on your weblog. Is this a paid theme or did you modify it yourself?
Anyway keep up the excellent quality writing, it is
rare to see a nice blog like this one today.
Thank you…I have been blogging for a little over a month…check the archives. 🙂 I used one of the WordPress layouts and modified to my tastes. 🙂
Wow, superb blog layout! How long have you been blogging for?
you make blogging look easy. The overall look of your site is great, let alone the content!
I know this site presents quality dependent articles
and additional information, is there any other site which presents
these information in quality?

EXCELLENT post, EXCELLENT quote, and, of course, EXCELLENT art!
Thank you Douglas!
You are my daily dose of inspiration!
Awwwww…..Glad to hear it Douglas! Hope you are doing well and that there are no fires your way!
Thanks Sharon, I may be getting more free time soon. Yes it will be a scary summer with such a drought. Trying to prepare to get out quickly if the worst should happen.
Good to have a plan!
Stunning work Sharon. And yes, if someone tries to copy you it is a form of flattery. Some just want to learn how to do other things and move on but some have no creativity of their own. Not necessary to share with the world your secrets. It’s the result you are sharing with us. I love seeing it!
Thank you Laura!
you’re welcome!

And her advice is beautiful too.
Thank you so much!
Good point! If you are not original, you should not call yourself an artist.
I agree!
Beautiful piece and great advice. (Can’t go wrong with an Einstein quote!) Next week, I’m taking a workshop with Stewart Cubley basically about intuitive painting. So excited!
That sounds so cool….enjoy the workshop!
I love it Sharon! Definitely an inspirational post! And you have all the right to be flattered when someone tries to copy your work. So, thanks fro sharing! I think that you’re not only a great artist but also an honest and great person! Keep up the good work! 🙂
Thank you so much! It’s not so flattering when copycats make you lose business…..Spending time pursuing copyright violations is not fun…..so I encourage artists to find their own style and art! 🙂
And I think you do the right thing. I’m sure behind every piece of art there is a lot of work, a lot and this work deserves respect
Indeed it does…and if not respected the law forces it. 😉 I enjoy creating and do it often….my biggest defense has always been to stay ahead of the copycats! Thanks For Stopping By My blog. 🙂
No worries! I’ll keep passing by! 😉
Sharon — I just had to say congrats on making WordPress work for you and art. You’ve only been blogging for one month … WOW!! I’ve told you before how impressed I am that you do things different than many artists and seem quite successful … here is another example. WP is such a more stable platform.
Thank you Frank!
You’re welcome Sharon — Its all about helping each other make it through life!
Hi Sharon, I love this, I would hope as many artists will read this very fine piece of art and writing, you have many lovely writings, This could be one of my favs and hope this will be read again and again…your right we work hard to find our own technique..Experiment is a key to learning and finding your own style…hehe I get off track sometimes…
Picasso said this:””Good artists copy, great artists steal.” – Pablo Picasso ”
When I saw this it bugged me and I guess I didn’t quite understand and still don’t..it is a quote that I thought about for awhile…
any way my talented friend…this is great

Sharon, I couldn’t have said it better myself! Artists may springboard off another’s work or ideas, but to do the exact same thing always feels like a violation. I recently saw this very thing as I sat with 2 little girls. One took the time to draw a wonderful rendition of a guitar, based on a real guitar that was across the room. Her friend grabbed her notebook as soon as she got the chance and drew the same guitar based on her friend’s drawing. Girl 1 protested vehemently and more than once. At the tender age of 7, this budding artist was already experiencing that kind of theft. She felt it instinctively and knew it for what it was. Kids call it cheating only because they don’t know the word plagiarism!
Cheating…plagiarism…and copyright infringement…yes, that feeling in the gut is instinctive. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
