In a calm moment before a storm broke out on Siesta Key Beach, I look up and down the coastline and spot a lone woman walking slowly beside the waves.  Her dress catches my eye immediately.  The bright red in direct contrast to the darkening surroundings.  She carries her matching shoes in one hand.  She appeared completely unconcerned by the ominous clouds forming overhead.  What was she thinking about?  A lost lover…..her career choices….the baby she gave up for adoption….her next novel….I will never know, but I find this image incredibly seductive with so many possibilities…..

No I didn’t win the big Powerball this weekend, but I do feel like I’ve won the lottery every single time I get to walk along the beaches of Venice, FL.  We’ve worked hard for over 15 years to afford a place by the ocean.  Right now it is a weekend/holiday/vacation getaway and we spend as much time as possible there. Someday it will be my only home.  For now I soak up the sunshine and my winnings…

Down by the sea…My art is inspired by the brightly colored shells and seaweed that wash up on the shores of Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida.  The smell of brine and fish is a sweet perfume for my soul.  I am renewed with the feel of sand between my toes and the sound of waves calling to my heart…

The beach has been heavenly in Florida for the past few weeks.  The weather has been perfect…slightly cool and sunny.  I’ve spent many hours walking up and down Caspersen in Venice, FL.  It is always intriguing how certain things wash up in clusters that do not wash up at other times at all.  Somedays it is starfish.  Others it might be crab bits.  Or these beautiful iridescent fan clams that form hearts when open.

Scientifically they are called Pinnidae and are a taxonomic family of large saltwater clams sometimes known as pen shells. They are marine bivalve molluscs in the order Pterioida.

I just think they are “love”ly…
