In a calm moment before a storm broke out on Siesta Key Beach, I look up and down the coastline and spot a lone woman walking slowly beside the waves.  Her dress catches my eye immediately.  The bright red in direct contrast to the darkening surroundings.  She carries her matching shoes in one hand.  She appeared completely unconcerned by the ominous clouds forming overhead.  What was she thinking about?  A lost lover…..her career choices….the baby she gave up for adoption….her next novel….I will never know, but I find this image incredibly seductive with so many possibilities…..

Not So Angry Birds

Growing up, my Mom always admonished me to “never feed the seagulls!”  For one thing they may poop on your head and for another they can become aggressive and come for food that you have not released from your hands yet. Then Alfred Hitchcock came out with the movie “The Birds” which further instilled the idea that these creatures were angry little monsters.  The truth is that I have been around these beauties of the beach my whole life and I have never been attacked.  Yes, I have fed them (shhhhh….don’t tell Mom!).  I find them to be shy and aloof most of the time.  To photograph them, you have to be quiet and move gently.  It is true that they will swarm for food, but that is just normal animal behavior.  In this photographic art piece I try to capture their beauty and gentleness.  These two look to be dancing.  While they may not be angry after all….they just might drop a bomb on you when you aren’t looking. 😉

For those of you following my map quest, I should say that I will not be creating all 50 states unless someone requests that I do so.  Nothing personal to all of my Wyoming fans, but a rectangle really does not make for much excitement. 😉  So I’ve found myself attracted to the funky shaped states such as my own: Florida.

Known as the “Sunshine State” for obvious reasons, Florida is kind of shaped like a gun which I find somewhat fitting.  Because every time I read a news report about some bizarre crime, the scene is always somewhere in Florida.  Truly we have many interesting people here and the real crazies seem to be drawn to it.  If a man is going to eat another man’s face while he sleeps, it will happen in Florida.  If someone will be attacked with a dead squirrel….yup, it will be here.

All of the oddities aside, I love my state.  I have lived here almost my entire life and I have no desire to move anywhere else.  If you want entertainment we have Disney, Epcot, Universal Studios and Busch Gardens.  But the real attraction are our beaches.  They are absolutely stunning!  Sarasota’s powder white sands and turquoise waves equals heaven to me.  I love the lush tropical landscaping and the relaxed atmosphere of the smaller cities.

Some interesting Florida facts:

  • Florida covers 58,560 square miles of area. 4,298 square miles are water.
  • There are 30,000 lakes and over 1,300 golf courses.
  • Florida has over 1,300 miles of coastline with 800 miles of beaches.
  • Florida has a warm climate throughout the year with a rainy/stormy season in the summer.
  • Florida’s capitol city, Tallahassee, was the only southern capitol east of the Mississippi River to remain in southern hands for the duration of the Civil War.
  • Amelia Island is the only location in the U.S. to have been ruled under eight different national flags.
  • The nation’s oldest city St. Augustine, was settled by Spanish explorers in 1565.
  • The Florida Everglades are the only place in the world where alligators and crocodile co-exist.
  • Santa Rosa County’s Blackwater River State Forest area offers over a million acres of protected wilderness with miles of hiking trails and canoeing routes and has been dubbed the “Canoe Capitol of Florida.”
  • More than 3,000 Seminole Indians live on six reservations throughout the state of Florida: Big Cypress, Brighton, Fort Pierce, Hollywood, Immokalee and Tampa.

A lot of people are looking for art online these days.  And it is currently a great place to find it too!  There are so many talented artists who represent themselves which enables them to offer pricing far below gallery.  I’ve been fishing lately too.  In the past 10 plus years I have created a lot of work.  And I recently rediscovered two tropical fish that I painted years ago.  What a catch!  Going through the many years worth of work is really interesting and fun.

Enjoy these fishy friends. 🙂

People often ask me what my favorite color might be.  I’ve always found that question extremely difficult to answer because I love ALL colors so much.  When I was a kid, I favored green.  It made me feel happy and alive.  But as I’ve matured, I have found that a lot of my work has shades of blue and aqua mixed together.  Blue and aqua would be two colors, but it is in fact my favorite. 🙂

Blue is the color of the clear sky and the deep sea. On the optical spectrum, blue is located between violet and green. Surveys in the U.S. and Europe show that blue is the color most commonly associated with harmony, faithfulness, and confidence.

Not sure why depression is linked to blue because this hue makes me feel really good inside.  So most days I am definitely feeling blue and love it!

Are You A Perfectionist?

As I start off the new year with new work I am reminded to strive to be my personal best.  For my entire life I have been labeled a “perfectionist” by family, friends, bosses and coworkers.  I used to think this was a bad thing.  A judgement call against me.  But today, psychology has established that there are two types of perfectionism.  Normal perfectionists pursue perfection without compromising their self-esteem, and derive pleasure from their efforts. Neurotic perfectionists strive for unrealistic goals and consistently feel dissatisfied when they cannot reach them.  I was happy to learn years ago that I was in fact “normal”. 🙂  I always have goals in mind that I know I can accomplish and I write up a plan to achieve them.  I work hard to get through the outline I created and when I arrive I have a deep satisfaction in my efforts.  Like anyone else, I do not like setbacks, but I do not let them “get me down”.  I just rewrite the plan to get me back on track.

All of the goals I have set for myself in 2014 are attainable.  Today I start the work!

I hope each of you reading my blog can strive for “your own personal best” this year and not some unrealistic standards set by society/your family/your mate/etc.  Set goals…..write out a plan….and get busy!
