We’ve been remodeling our home for the past 2 months and a new pool is going in next month. I’ve been so busy with the house, that my art has had to take a back seat for a little while. I am so ready for a Summer Vacation. Are you?

With Christmas rapidly approaching, I am knee deep in commission work and order fulfillment of art prints! But 2016 has been calling to me with an urge to create new pieces. As promised, I am sharing more of my work from my art school days. I did not do much painting back then. My degree slants toward the commercial side, so I used pencils, pens, and markers as my primary mediums. One of the good things about schooling is that often you are challenged to try techniques that you would not have chosen otherwise. My “Proud Lion” above is creating using what is called “stippling” and is referred to as pointillism in art terminology.
This was created nearly 25 years ago. There was no computer help. The entire piece was done by hand using an ink pen on white cardboard. Many countless dots over and over again (including what looks like solid black) make up his shapes and shadows. I had to “draw” him in my mind and couldn’t rely on printing out something I could dot over. Nope. It’s all handmade. In the close up, you can see the irregularities in the dots which is a dead giveaway that no computer was involved.
I am not knocking computer work. I use it all of the time now! I am simply remembering the cramped hands and cross eyes of yesteryear. 😉 I also appreciate the fact that nowadays you can make mistakes and quickly fix them. Back then there were a lot of “do overs”.
Times have changed, but true art remains……timeless.

When I was a little girl growing up in Myakka City, FL, there was a neighbor just down the road who raised peacocks. These creatures are surprisingly loud and when the wind was just right, our yard would be filled with their haunting cries. I would sometimes take the back pastures over to their farm. I had to go through a handful of barbed wire fences which is something I became an expert at. I would greet the cows being careful not to irritate any of the bulls. I would inevitably pick some wild flowers, but it was the sight of of those brilliant feathers I was after. The males with their jewel colored plumes always mesmerized me. Once in awhile I would get lucky and one of the fowl would have strayed close to the fence and lost a feather. This was the grand prize!

It may come as a surprise to some of my readers and followers, but I have a rebellious streak in me that made me a less than ideal student, a problem daughter and ex-wife to 3 men. I’ve never liked being told what I should do or how I should act. I am a rule breaker and an outspoken independent woman. My mother would often scold calling me a little brat. Her favorite line was, “That mouth of yours is going to get you into real trouble someday.” I suppose she was right in that I have found myself in many uncomfortable situations over the years by words I’ve said. After my first meeting with my now Mother-In-Law she told my husband, “Wow, she will say anything.” But that openness is also my “saving grace”. It enabled me to stand up to an abuser declaring enough was enough. I exposed everything without leaving off details and was able to heal. It is also what has allowed me to be a “real” mom to my own child. She was never confused about where babies came from or whether or not Santa was real. This same freedom of thought and voice is also what gives me the ability to create artwork without following set guidelines. Because I do not limit myself in any way, I am able to paint with acrylics, take photographs or use my computer to produce artwork.
What is your “saving grace”? It just might be something that you were told was “bad” about you, but in reality turns out to be something so very “good”.

“How Deep Is Your Love”
“The Roots Of Love Run Deep” is by far one of my most popular paintings. I am not certain if it is the design…the colors or the title that attracts people from all over the world. I have shipped prints to Japan….Australia….even small Greek islands. Love truly is the Universal language…I am glad that I speak it.
