Point Of Power

Acrylic on Yupo Art Painting

Sharon Cummings

2012

.

.

I have been away for most of the past few weeks working on registering all of my work with the U.S. Copyright Office. This has been a daunting task!  With thousands of images to review, organize and upload, it has left little time for much else.  But it is done. 🙂

Copyright is established as soon as a work is put into a tangible form and it has certain legal protections without registration, but having work registered gives you some extra legal leverage.  It also is something that can be transferred to someone else legally like my daughter when I pass away.  It will make it easier for her to take over my estate of art.  But I am ready to start creating again!

Thank you for your patience.

There is a secret “Society” for artists where you can buy prints at a much lower price.  O.k. it’s not really a secret, but you rarely see advertisements from them.  And that includes me.  I have been a member of “Society 6” for a year and a half now.  I sell well there, but have not put much into it due to lack of time.  If you follow me, you know I am very active in Social Media and my blog.  I also create new work daily.  I am a mom and wife.  I only have so many hours in the day. But I am going to focus my energy on this site for the month of March.  This BENEFITS my collectors greatly!  If you’ve wanted to collect, but could not afford my regular print prices, this site is for you. 🙂  Or if you are a seasoned collector and want MORE of my art it is also for you! You can get my prints at the lowest price online here.  You can also get coffee mugs, cell phone cases, etc.  Lots of ways to collect for a lot less cash. 🙂  Sizes are limited, but check it out to see if you find one that FITS you perfectly!

Sometimes a space cries out for a detailed landscape with trees, sky and perhaps a water feature.  Other times all that is needed to make the perfect setting is color.  I have always been a color junkie and the simple colorscapes are my favorite.  I have been selling a lot of these lately and there is a good reason. They are on sale!

I rarely have sales these days, but I have been really hankering to paint using just color.  Glorious color!  So these beauties are on sale.  These are commissioned works which means I paint one similar to the listing.  No two paintings could ever be exactly alike, which means all of my collectors get originals.  I just love these and and look forward to painting more!

And here is a little HINT…..Right now you can own an original painting hand painted by me and signed/dated on the back for LESS than a print of the same size!!  That’s right……an original for a lot less than a print.  🙂

Is Digital Art Real Art?

I had a conversation with a friend the other day about Digital Art.  He wanted to know if I was going to be taking a mix of all my work (i.e. acrylic paintings) or more of my computer art to my upcoming show.  Throughout the chat the words were never said, but the implication was there.  The acrylic paintings were “real art” and the digital stuff…well….not so much.  I myself was resistant to computer generated artwork for years.  I did not think it belonged in the same category as paintings or drawings.  To me it looked “different” and as a traditional painter, I was having trouble with that.  I also did not understand how much hard work it was!  There is also the argument that states that you cannot get a “one of a kind” piece with digitally produced media.  This is true!  But you also cannot get a one of a kind photograph either unless you have the negative or file yourself and then you can only enjoy it as a small inverse image or on your computer.  To fully enjoy photography you must have a print made of it so you can hang it on your wall.  It is the same with digital art.

Image

I do not create ANYTHING entirely with my computer.  I do not do fractal work.  I always start with one of my original paintings or a photograph.  I copy my own hand painted patterns from original works.  I draw designs.  Every piece I create on my computer starts with something I did with my hands away from the black box.  My mandalas start from my paintings on Yupo.  My Stone Rock’d Art starts with patterns from my Labor of Love pieces which I painted by hand.

Image

I am sure that the charcoal and fruit ink painters were incredulous when oil painters came along.  It was something new and untested. How could something so radically different from charcoal ever become popular?  To me “real art” has nothing to do with the mediums used.  If you lock a creative person into a room without anything, they will make art from dust particles.  Art is the expression or application of creative skill and imagination, producing works to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. But is it “real art”? Is it collectible?  In the last year I have sold over 1000 prints that I produced with the aid of my computer.  Now to me that is beautiful and oh so powerful……and undeniable real!

Digital artists….rock on!

Enjoy all of my work here…both traditional and contemporary:

I Am An Alien…

It’s been suggested in various groups that I might be an alien.  Why?  Other artists see how much work I produce and how much I market myself.  They wonder how I can do so much and be human.  I’ve addressed this in other posts, but it all boils down to focus for me.  Some experts might even call it OCD. 😉  I will say that as I am ageing that my focus has gotten a little blurry sometimes and I do forget to do things on occasion.  I also get tired.  But this time of year I am hyped on the excitement of the season.  I absolutely thrive on painting gifts for people to share with the one’s they love.  The thought of the joy my work will bring is out of this world!  And getting ready for my first show has me smiling at the speed of light.  It’s a full creative moon! There are UFO’s everywhere (unbelievably fun objects).  It means more hours of painting and more hours of promoting, but just maybe the Mother Ship has a spa waiting for me come mid December…..

It can be difficult to find balance in your life when you have so many demands pulling you in different directions.  Family, friends, work, health, etc. all need a place.  I create and list a lot of work and many have asked me things like “Do you sleep?”  I get 8 hours a night. I also market my work heavily and some have wondered how on earth I do it.  With experience, I have become extremely efficient at marketing.  I am also pretty handy with the camera and scanner.  I do most things quickly….I always have.  Patience is not one of my virtues!  I not only run a thriving successful art business, I also grow an organic garden, care for my daughter, care for animals and cook/prepare 95% of my own meals (Celiac).  I shop for my family, clean house and exercise every single day.  I go to dinner parties, family gatherings and art shows.  I play Scrabble.  I do not have extra hours in the day.  I am just big on balance and scheduling.   I do not allow myself to get distracted in web surfing or reading endless posts on Facebook.  I stay focused.  I have time slots for my work and I stick to them.  This ensures I have time for what is important in life.  I eat on a schedule too.  By keeping all that I do in priority when I am working on them or experiencing them, I never run out of time.   If I am at the park with my family, that is what I am doing and thinking about….not work. If I am working, that is my focus.  Some things you cannot help coming into your life to throw you off, but I have found that MOST of what keeps us from using our time wisely is useless.  How many cat memes have your read?  How many political posts? Farmville?  Tweets about what you had for lunch?  Do you sit on the toilet and get lost in a magazine?  Do you watch T.V.?  I don’t. That is how I do it…I do not waste time, so that I have plenty of it for everything I want in life!

I’ve got some “Black Magic” up my sleeves…..no spells to cast though.  These original art paintings have been one of my most popular styles in the last 10 years.  I love creating them but abhor photographing them.  The camera never captures their beauty.  They have a 3D look to them…like smoke….the camera sees too much in color blocks and the fine details are lost.  I have considered retiring these 3 times, but I always come back to them because I enjoy painting them so much and my collectors gobble them up.  The economical pricing sure helps too!  I’ve got some new ones coming….
