I love the BIG CATS! We have a sanctuary in Tampa which is a real treat if you are ever in the area. They have lions, tigers, jaguars and leopards and some I cannot even remember. This one is a composite colorful feline. Enjoy!

I’ve had a lot more time to get outdoors here in sunny Florida lately.  We love to kayak down the Myakka River and saw this amazing creature recently…Gators tend to stay far away from humans, so we never feel scared.  But I do appreciate a zoom lens!  Go gators!

“Love A Bull 2”

New Art Mixed Media Painting

Sharon Cummings

2014

For the career online artist, each day brings it’s share of bull.  All we really want to do is create.  There is an energy and freedom in the creative process that feeds our souls. Everything else is outside of our comfort zone.  We list and promote, but we’ve gotten used to that.  It’s the other stuff like Chinese sweat shops stealing our work including our names, so that when our collectors search they find us there.  Regular folks that take our work and put them on socks, t-shirts and mugs for their schools, business, etc.  The businesses that want to pay us pennies for our hard work.  Companies stealing patterns from your work for brush tools.  And the list goes on…

One could choose to focus on all of that crap and become depressed.  Or the choice can be to choose to love your job no matter what.  I have to make that choice every single day.  Still choosing L.O.V.E..

As promised, I am sharing more of my work from my art school days.  I did not do much painting back then.  My degree slants toward the commercial side, so I used pencils, pens, and markers as my primary mediums.  One of the good things about schooling is that often you are challenged to try techniques that you would not have chosen otherwise.  My “Proud Lion” above is creating using what is called “stippling” and is referred to as pointillism in art terminology.

This was created nearly 25 years ago.  There was no computer help.  The entire piece was done by hand using an ink pen on white cardboard.  Many countless dots over and over again (including what looks like solid black) make up his shapes and shadows.  I had to “draw” him in my mind and couldn’t rely on printing out something I could dot over.  Nope.  It’s all handmade.  In the close up, you can see the irregularities in the dots which is a dead giveaway that no computer was involved.

I am not knocking computer work.  I use it all of the time now!  I am simply remembering the cramped hands and cross eyes of yesteryear. 😉  I also appreciate the fact that nowadays you can make mistakes and quickly fix them.  Back then there were a lot of “do overs”.

Times have changed, but true art remains……timeless.

White tigers are beautiful.  The white tiger is a rare pigmentation variant of the Bengal tiger. This creature is a mutant.  The human race often finds animal mutations and defects desirable, yet in our own species we do not.  We are a drawn to oddities and differentiation in nature, yet shun people who do not share the same genetic make ups as we do.  Something to ponder….

In all mammals, I am most drawn to their eyes.  As in humans, they tell a story.  I had the opportunity to observe and photograph white tigers at Busch Gardens years back.  When I create animal art, I like to use a variety of images and then digitally paint new patterns and colors.  I am creating art and not just a copy of what is found in nature.

Image

My “Hungry Eyes” has been one of my most popular and best selling prints to date.  I will be curious to see if the mutant will exceed this one.  If human nature is any indication, it certainly will. 😉

Growing up in Florida we had a few things to keep us entertained.  The biggest being football.  Yes, I am a Buccaneer fan even when they suck.   I was a Buc fan when they weren’t cool with their orange jersey’s with the wimpy little pirate.  But there is nothing like college football!  The crowds have a different feel….they are electric with energy.  Cars are decorated to the hilt and entire outfits reflect teams all the way to the face paint.  Gainesville Florida is only a skip away and I have always been a Gator fan.  My Dad used to take me to games (neither of my brothers liked football…go figure).  I always remember the rush of the kick off and the frenzy of touchdowns.  The smell of popped corn and hotdogs.  These are great memories for me and I still hold a torch for my favorite team!  “Swampy” is my tribute to the BEST teams in College Football!  And I know I am not alone because Mr. Swampy is well on his way to becoming my BEST SELLER!  Go Gators!
