When I was a little girl, Sunday mornings were fraught with anxiety and dread. It was a day of worship and family which should have been a rewarding and pleasant time. But when you grow up in a home and culture of abuse, it is anything but. It took me many years to lose my religion and find my spirituality. I am not against the tenets of most of the religions I know. It is the hypocrisy and misuse that is harmful to me. I have many friends who find their religious life enriching and integral to their lives. What a blessing! For me, I had to reclaim Sunday mornings and make them a peaceful time where I can relax, drink tea or read a book and contemplate all of the good in my life. I am thankful for so much! I also enjoy having a nice and calm meal with my husband and daughter. It’s a great day that I have come to look forward to each week.

Have No F.E.A.R…

Don’t be afraid.  It’s only color.  I have to smile really big whenever I sell one of my bold mega colorful paintings.  It lets me know that someone out there has the assertiveness to go with a piece that yells from the walls, “Look at me!!!”  It is even more satisfying when it is an abstract.  Abstracts make most people uncomfortable.  Some will say that they just do not understand abstract art.  There is good news!  You do not have to.  You just have to like it and have the courage to allow yourself to enjoy it.  I do not understand how an opal is formed, but I know it’s beautiful.  I do not understand how a beetle has such iridescence in it’s shell, but I know it is stunning.  I do not understand how the human eye has all of those amazing patterns, but enjoy looking at them.  A lot of people like familiarity and stick to representational artwork.  But what so many do not realize is that the world has far more abstract imagery.  It just takes a closer look.  Have no fear!

Making The Old New Again…

I have a lot of artwork stored in my computer.  I’ve listed some pieces, only to take them down later due to lack of interest.  But what I have found is that I can continue to work with a piece at a later date to create something entirely new and fresh that DOES get a lot of attention!  This is a very new process for me.  In the past, when I was done, I was done.  I never went back to an old piece to rework it. I think that the digital age has really helped me over this hump.  Out with the old and in with the new!

I am not an alcoholic.  In fact, I rarely drink and when I do I am such a lightweight it is laughable. A half a glass of wine and I am good.  However, I have done a 12 step program.  I am a recovered Bulimic.  Bulimia is a form of food addiction.  I have not binged/purged in over 20 years.  It was a long and difficult journey and I got some professional help too.  

These days I have a very healthy outlook on food and even at Thanksgiving keep my portions to what is right for my body.  I no longer crave the physical pain of overeating to mask the emotional pain from childhood abuse.  When I feel hurt, I grab a paint brush instead of a cookie. I am healed.

The Serenity Prayer was a big part of my recovery and I still repeat it in my head whenever I am feeling stressed.  It is a very calming mantra.  

For all of those who have dealt with addictions and have overcome, I solute you!  For those who are still struggling, I dedicate this piece to you. May you also find the peace, courage and wisdom you need….
