I sell a lot of artwork.  These days my print making partners do most of the shipping and customer service for me.  However, I do still paint a significant amount of commission work and originals.  One of the joys I get as an artist is actually “seeing” my work hanging in someone’s home or office.  Not many send me photos, but when they do, I am always taken aback.  Why?  I rarely see my work displayed.  It gets painted on my paint splattered old table and then hung on messy walls until it is fully cured and ready to ship.  I am a creator, so that is what I do.  My collectors are the decorators and as such it is through their camera lens that I get to see my work as they see it for the first time.  It’s kinda cool and strange all at once.  Right there is a piece of my soul hanging in the home of someone I’ve never met.  But I can see it….yes I can.

This arrived in my Etsy inbox this morning.  I did not do anything to their photo other than save it to my computer and upload it here.  So if you’ve ever wondered.  Yes, my colors are that vibrant in real life. 🙂

I bet you were surprised to see that as my title.  I am normally an upbeat energetic life loving artist.  I still am. But, I have problems just like everyone else.  I have health concerns, a teenager, animals in my care, a marriage, family struggles, financial worries sometimes and the list goes on.

I have learned by and large that there are two types of people on the Internet. Those who focus on all of life’s crap and negative things in the world.  And those that zero in on the good in people and the beauty of our world. Very few are in the middle.  I see the news.  I know about pain and suffering.  My life certainly has it’s share, but a long time ago, I decided that I wanted to be in the second camp.  The experts call this being an “optimist”.  I just call it self preservation.  I choose every single day to “live in the moment” and focus on positive energy.  This works for me and keeps me on a track that makes me happy on most days.  Not every day.  But most. I am satisfied with that. 🙂

If my artwork can take you away from your problems, even for a moment, that also brings me great joy!  And in that very life affirming feeling lies my purpose: to bring joy to the World.

There are several definitions for the word “vitality”.  My favorite is the capacity for the continuation of a meaningful or purposeful existence.  So the question is where does this “drive” come from?  For me it comes from several places. There is a pure satisfaction in creating artwork that I know will bring happiness to other people. That keeps me going.  But I also have a need to earn a living to pay my bills so I can eat.  The former gives my life purpose and the later is necessary for motivation. At 45 I feel more “vitality” now than I ever have.  It’s funny how in the first half of your life you have a lot of energy but less focus.

Enjoy my latest in my Transforming Energy series titled “Vitality”.

Last night I was looking on my high school alumni page on Facebook and one person said they were looking for a specific teacher.  Another mentioned that this woman had passed away a few years back from cancer.  This person was disappointed because she really wanted to find Ms. H and tell her that she really did “make something of her life” and that she has “amounted to something”.  What a horrible chip to carry for so many years.  When someone you look up to tells you that you are not good enough, it can really stick.  But I thought about it and realized that sometimes negative people in our lives can contribute the most to our overall happiness and positivity.  You can either believe the words they say and weave them into your life so that their predictions come true.  Or you can dig deep and tell yourself that you will prove them wrong. You can learn to love yourself and see things that they never could.

No matter what anyone tells you, you ARE good enough.  Teachers, clergy and especially your parents cannot tell you how your life will go.  Only you can do that.  If you are still living with a “chip” on your shoulder from something someone said in your past, isn’t it time to let go of it?  You are perfect, whole and complete.
