“Parrot Head”
New Mixed Media Art Painting
Sharon Cummings
2014
I really couldn’t resist naming this guy “Parrot Head”.  After all it is both, literally and figuratively.  And I do live in paradise close to margaritaville.  I’ve got tropical shirts and a hammock.  I just need to turn on some Jimmy Buffet tunes and I can convince myself that it is 5 o’ clock somewhere. 😉

When I was a little girl growing up in Myakka City, FL, there was a neighbor just down the road who raised peacocks. These creatures are surprisingly loud and when the wind was just right, our yard would be filled with their haunting cries. I would sometimes take the back pastures over to their farm. I had to go through a handful of barbed wire fences which is something I became an expert at. I would greet the cows being careful not to irritate any of the bulls. I would inevitably pick some wild flowers, but it was the sight of of those brilliant feathers I was after. The males with their jewel colored plumes always mesmerized me. Once in awhile I would get lucky and one of the fowl would have strayed close to the fence and lost a feather. This was the grand prize!

Spring has sprung in Florida! Â The weather is absolutely perfect. Â The azaleas are blooming in glorious hot pink beauty. Â The grass is greening up. Â Bees are buzzing. Â My orchids are budding. And then there is the pollen. Â Aaaaaachooo!! Â Yup, I get allergies bad this time of the year and that sticky yellow stuff gets in my nose, eyes and lungs and I spend my time indoors or masked. If I venture outside I wear a hat (so it doesn’t get in my hair), a mask and glasses. Â I shower before bed and keep my sheets as clean as possible. Â It only lasts about a month or so like this, but it is a wait. Â What to do? Â Create of course! Â I love the LOOK of Spring and decided to keep it positive with this fun and whimsical piece today.
This work is a mixed media piece combining some of my Labor of Love paintings with a stock background and graphic elements.  A real joy to put together. 🙂  Enjoy!

Maybe this post isn’t as tantalizing as “Girls Gone Wild” but us artists do have a tendency to let go sometimes and just create without boundaries. Â I love painting fish and birds with a tropical flair, but I usually know in advance that I will be painting them. Â This piece titled “A Rare Bird” is one of those pieces that seemed to paint itself. Â I just started slinging paint and lo and behold a bird appeared. Â I love these moments in creativity. Â I’ve learned to just go with it….It’s a wild ride!
