It must be really hard to watch someone you love go off to war.  Whether it is your parent, sibling or child, the fear must be pretty intense.  I only have one child and the worst I go through is waiting for her to get home at night when she is out with friends.  I am very blessed.

My Dad served in the Korean war long before I was born and while I never had to deal with that kind of sense of longing and worry, I know my grandparents sure did.  I had an opportunity to read some letters that my Dad sent them while he was deployed.  He was not a person of many words, so it was pretty special for me to get to read these.  The letters showed a young man who was extremely homesick and who had found a new appreciation for his parents and all that he had left behind at home.  Life seemed a lot more precious to him while he was there.

My husband William Patrick took this photo yesterday while driving around Tampa running errands.  He thought it was cool and it certainly is.  But to me it also provokes a strong emotion of missing someone and hanging on with all of your might.  It exemplifies the American Spirit….
