“Mystic Moose”

New Mixed Media Art Work

Sharon Cummings

2014

There is so much seriousness in art these days, that I sometimes feel a need to “lighten” it up a bit.  I have a very quirky sense of humor and I’d like to think it shows through in my artwork sometimes.  Here is Mystic Moose for your contemplation.  I hope he makes you smile. 🙂

While I still have pieces from my old portfolio to share, I’ve been busy creating new work as well.  I’ve got a few paintings, some patterns and also animals coming soon!  I just wish there was more time in the day…

Everyone who knows me well, is aware of my spirituality but lack of religion. Religion fascinates me and I really enjoy taking photographs of religious symbolism.  I also delight in painting and creating all things spiritual sometimes combining visual imagery from various beliefs. In my studies over the years, I have found that all of the major religions have a dark side and each also has light and joy in their teachings.  I was raised in a Christian home where abuse was the norm including much of it within the Church.  I have seen the seedy side for sure.  But Easter is meant to be a celebration that expresses life and renewal!  It has both both Pagan and Christian roots.  Whatever your leanings, it is a day to look around you and breath in the goodness of this earth.  To be thankful for the life that you are living.  Whether it is brunch with good friends,  a walk on the beach or a family gathering with food and festivities…….It’s Spring!  Happy Easter!

The word “succulent” sounds titillating.  You can almost “feel” what it means as it rolls off of your tongue.  Say it right now.  Slowly…

O.k. maybe I just wanted to use the words “succulent and “titillating” in the same sentence. 😉  But these beauties grow all over the place in Florida.  They seem to be just as happy in our tropical swamp as they are in the dry air of the desert.  But with thousands of varieties available, they do have varying care requirements.  So if you want to grow some of these beauties inside or out, read the labels on the plants before buying.  They do love bright sunlight, but they can get sunburned.  I have seen a few wither and die myself.

I love the smooth feel they have and the variety of colors they come in.  I’ve taken artistic liberty with this one obviously.  I was intrigued by the interesting shapes and shadows in this plant.  Nature is my inspiration!

Getting WET…

As a painter, I am no stranger to getting wet.  For years I’ve had acrylic splattered, dripped, sprayed and poured onto me.  And sometimes I just stick my hands right into it.  I am finding that photography is also keeping me damp.  I live in Florida where it is humid and hot most of the year.  Right now it is quite chilly at 35 degrees, but last week at Selby Gardens there was one place that was warm and quite drippy.  They have a huge greenhouse there with the most beautiful and exotic plants you can image.  My group of friends were awestruck as we walked around the lush interior.  While we separated ourselves I found this small glassed off area that was all green inside except for one lone orchid.  The condensation formed on the glass in front of it and it reminded me of a rainy day in the tropics….

I got a little note from the Universe today which read, “You simply cannot know, Sharon What will make others happy.  But you can always know for yourself.  Go for it….The Universe”  That’s my reminder.  I have been working really hard painting custom work for others and creating pieces for my show that I’ve neglected what makes me happiest.  Like the picture above, I need some time for myself walking along my own creative beach.  There is such a freedom in just letting the energy from your soul release itself onto whatever canvas you choose.  So I am off to do just that today. 🙂

Love is love.  As I fused this painting together I immediately saw hearts forming in several places, but it was only when I looked further that I saw that there were two beings holding a heart between them.  The two halves made one heart.  One love.  I particularly like that these two beautiful souls appear to not have gender, status or anything that makes them different from each other.  Just two people bonded in love.  Love is love…..
