About a month before an election is a great time to step away from the glowing screens and enjoy nature, animals, a good book….really anything that is life affirming and healthy. That’s why I have not been blogging. I voted and hope you will too. And now we all wait…

With the recent passing of Maya Angelou, I was inspired to go through my books and find a few of hers for a reread. A favorite is “I know Why The Caged Bird Sings.” It has been said that a caged bird sings because it wants freedom. I’ve had a bird and he sang whenever he was in his cage, but he also sang when he was freely moving around my home. He sang on my shoulder as he nuzzled my ear. He sang when he was having his bath. He even sang when he was eating. In fact, the only time he didn’t sing was at night when I would cloak his cage in darkness. Only then did all go quiet. I believe we are all like birds. We sing because we must. Whatever your song is be it art, music, writing, cleaning, building things, dancing, speaking, etc. it is something that you MUST do. A deep yearning within that moves you without thought. I do not ask myself why I create art. I simply do it.
Rest In Peace Maya…

I will be in Orlando, FL this Memorial Day weekend with my daughter enjoying fun food, pampering and relaxing at the Gaylord Resort. I work hard and rarely take time off, so I do not consider this indulgent or lucky (though to many it surely is). But that is not what I am talking about. What I am referring to in my title is the fact that my loved ones who have served in the military have always come home. My Grandfather saw combat in World War 2 and made it out alive. My Dad served during the Korean War and also came back to the United States with his life and without injury. Two of my uncles have served and they are still with us today.
So as we start this Memorial Holiday weekend with thoughts of BBQ’s and shopping, I am taking a moment to be silent and pray. I am praying for all of the people out there who have not been as fortunate as I have. Those that suffer the loss of the ones they loved who are now gone forever. For so many it is not just a day off from work or a trip to the beach. And for me it is not a time to point fingers or judge governments either. It is simply a time of remembrance and compassion….
Be safe this Memorial Day…

It must be really hard to watch someone you love go off to war. Whether it is your parent, sibling or child, the fear must be pretty intense. I only have one child and the worst I go through is waiting for her to get home at night when she is out with friends. I am very blessed.
My Dad served in the Korean war long before I was born and while I never had to deal with that kind of sense of longing and worry, I know my grandparents sure did. I had an opportunity to read some letters that my Dad sent them while he was deployed. He was not a person of many words, so it was pretty special for me to get to read these. The letters showed a young man who was extremely homesick and who had found a new appreciation for his parents and all that he had left behind at home. Life seemed a lot more precious to him while he was there.
My husband William Patrick took this photo yesterday while driving around Tampa running errands. He thought it was cool and it certainly is. But to me it also provokes a strong emotion of missing someone and hanging on with all of your might. It exemplifies the American Spirit….

Good ol’ Honest Abe. It is interesting how artists over the years have fixated on certain historic or iconic figures as subject for many creative pieces. I have a few that I come back to over and over again. Abraham Lincoln is one of them. Presidents who get assassinated seem to really “stick” with us, but that is not the allure. He was not a handsome man by any standards, but there is something about his eyes, nose and long face that just says “calm assertiveness”. And that is sexy! His features were very prominent and strong which also has appeal. Lots of contrast to work with. A perfect playground for an artist! I know when I watch movies, I am always most attracted to strong men with “presence” regardless of their looks….that is what Abe had….”A presence”…..And that alone is enough to get the temperature up a degree. 😉
