Has someone gotten your goat lately?  Where does that saying come from anyway?

Phrase Finder believes that the saying is an American term dating back to the 1900’s and sticks by the “commonly repeated story which purports to explain the phrase’s origin is that goats were placed with racehorses to keep them calm. When ne’er-do-wells who wanted the horse to race badly removed it, i.e. they ‘got someone’s goat’, the horse became unsettled and ran badly.”

Ye Olde English Sayings theorizes that the origins of “getting your goat” is reference to “an old English belief that putting a goat in the barn would have a calming effect on the cows, hence producing more milk. When one wanted to antagonize/terrorize one’s enemy, you would abscond with their goat rendering their milk cows less- to non-productive.”

Either way, the common belief is “goats are the great calmers of nature.”

I just think they are cute. 😉

“Colorful Goat”

New Mixed Media Art Painting

Sharon Cummings

2014

I had an idea to “Color Fusion” a goat.  I absolutely adore Nubians and remember fondly life on the farm with these sweet creatures.  I have lots of pictures of goats in my stash. The only problem is that all of my photos are from around 30 to 35 years old.  They are blurry and unusable.  My wonderful collector Laura Carpenter of Texas came to my rescue.  She took the time to photograph her lovely animals and donate the results to me.  And here is what I did…

True story.  When I was a little girl, we used to sleep with the goats in the barn some nights as a “camp out”.  Me and my 3 siblings would all take our sleeping bags and nestle in the hay next to our favorite creature.  My oldest brother was always a prankster, so one night while sleeping in the barn, the rest of us decided it was time for revenge. Big brother had the unfortunate kinky hair genes.  I say unfortunate, because what we did next took a lot of undoing.  He was also a very deep sleeper.  It was a combination he would deeply regret.  The three of us gathered up the little round pellets known as goat poop and carefully embedded them all in his hair. Hundreds of those little turds all wound up in his tight kinks.  When he woke up and scratched his head it was “game on”!  We all ran….LOL

Enjoy!

I am always trying to think of new subject matter to Stone Rock….one of my signature art styles.  Lately I have been taking a second look at images and paintings that I have had up for a long time that have not received much attention.  And it is working.  I have sold pieces Stone Rock’d that never sold without it.  My latest transformation is here.  I have taken “Pinky” below and added my trademarked Stone Rock’d pattern for an interesting and “Pop Art” effect.  I had a pet goat as a child named Lulu Bell….she would be proud. 🙂
