This was a hard piece for me to create.  It wasn’t so much the labor, as it was the emotion.  This beautiful boy was my Bacchus.  He was one of the most exuberant and loving dogs I have ever known.  Like all Great Danes, he had his goofy side.  But he also had an intuitive understanding of the feelings in the people and animals around him. He was a sensitive.

We lost him way too soon to bone cancer.  It was devastating to see a dog with so much life and joy be brought down so quickly.  We did not let him suffer at all. We sent him away peacefully BEFORE the pain meds stopped working.  It seemed the right thing to do.  It’s strange that I do not remember much about his passing other than seeing my daughter drape her little body over his and tell him goodbye.  It is like I’ve blocked a lot of it out, but the tears came then and they are coming now as I look back.

Bacchus visits me in my dreams quite often.  More than any other animal that I have ever had the privilege to care for.  The visions of him are always very real.  I smell him and feel his warmth.  I am keenly aware of his presence and energy.  I have the feeling of actually being “with him”.  It is so intense that I expect to wake up with a tuft of his hair in my hands.  I miss him and do believe we will be reunited someday.

For now, I simply share him with others in my words, pictures and in my art…

I’ve never been able to identify with people who say “I don’t like animals.”  I know they have their reasons, but I cannot imagine my world without them.  I grew up for part of my childhood on a farm and I befriended all sorts of critters. Goats and pigs were a favorite.  But ultimately my most beloved are dogs. Aside from their loyal and loving companionship, they are just gosh darn cute! I’ve always especially loved their paws.  There is something about them that gives me warm fuzzies.  Recently while making homemade dog treats, I saw paws in the sweet potatoes I was cutting.  Here is my dog paw.  A canine you can eat!

Of course I have other paws too….

You never go back……..That’s what they say.  For me, that has been true when it comes to black dogs.  Great Danes in particular. When I was a little girl growing up in a dysfunctional home filled with abuse there was a constant in my life that brought me comfort. During the worst of times, I would dream of a big black dog that would soothe me and make me feel protected.  We never had Great Danes and we never had a black dog.  It wasn’t until I was in my early 30’s that I met my husband who had two of these gentle giants and one happened to be black.  It took her awhile because she had been abused too, but once she bonded to me we were thick as thieves….She lived to be 12 which is ancient for any large breed dog.  I believe she lived so long because she knew I needed her to help me heal.  And heal I did.  Ever since she passed, I’ve always wanted to have a black dog in my life.  We adopted another, but he passed too.  And now we have “Lumin”…..my third black Great Dane…..Nope I am not going back. 😉

Working on some new pieces for my upcoming show.  My love of dogs makes painting them a natural to me.  It’s interesting as I am painting more on canvas again and scanning these…the canvas texture makes the image look a little blurry, but then I realized that I am comparing them to the ultra smooth perfect background of digital work.  See like I mentioned in a post a few days ago….it is VERY DIFFERENT!  But both are beautiful. 🙂  I hope you enjoy my dog art paintings as much as I enjoy making them.

I have really been enjoying creating my new series “The Looking Glass”.  It is so fun and interesting to see what appears when I fuse my original paintings together.  With this piece the entire image formed a dog.  I do see a smiling frog in the center of his forehead and two horses flanking his noggin, but I just found a dog.  Your dog?  It looks like a Universal Dog to me.  It could be any breed and any size.  I love the semi-abstract nature of this painting.  I have found many things in these works, but I really seem to have a knack for finding dogs.  I found this one below in Mastiff Rescue of Florida recently:

Who knows what I will find today……

You say goodbye….Today is a sad day as I sit here missing my sweet companion Sampson.  Mere words cannot express my sorrow….He was a magnificent animal with nothing but love to give.  A 190 pound sweetheart.  Due to his size and deep bark he was also my protector.  I always felt safe with Sampson in my home.  When we left our daughter home by herself, we always knew she was protected.  Brinks had nothing on Sampsonite.  In this post, I do not want to focus on the trauma that ended his life.  I want to celebrate him!  If you’ve never laid your body across such a massive dog and felt his love envelope you, then you cannot understand how deep the “missing” goes.  He had such a “presence” and I am not just talking about the house clearing farts….no he gave life to our home.  From the gentle way he played with Toby our little lab to the sweet grunting for attention.  Yeah, he was a grunter and provided us with a lot of laughter. Dogs like Sampson can never be replaced….he leaves a big hole, but I can smile in the knowing that he is not suffering anymore and that if there is a doggie heaven that he is there now grunting and playing with our Mojo (black dog pictured below).  Rest in peace my love….

If you look around my portfolios, you will notice that I create a lot of animal art.  I grew up in the country on a horse ranch and we had all sorts of critters.  On top of the regular creatures like horses, dogs and cats my Mom was forever bringing home a rescue of some kind.  A pigeon or a pig.  She loved them all and she taught me to care and love for them too.  As an adult I am quite find of dogs and right now I have three.  Great Danes are my breed of choice and we have had 3 at the same time in the past.  We always have at least one in our pack.  I love to paint them and bring out their expressive features.  Many of these gentle giants end up in rescue due to their extreme puppy cuteness that becomes a 100 pound dog in 6 months!  Most people cannot handle small puppies let alone a HUGE one that can eat your sofa!  We take them…we love them….we keep them for life!  You can see more of my dog art here:
