It must be really hard to watch someone you love go off to war.  Whether it is your parent, sibling or child, the fear must be pretty intense.  I only have one child and the worst I go through is waiting for her to get home at night when she is out with friends.  I am very blessed.

My Dad served in the Korean war long before I was born and while I never had to deal with that kind of sense of longing and worry, I know my grandparents sure did.  I had an opportunity to read some letters that my Dad sent them while he was deployed.  He was not a person of many words, so it was pretty special for me to get to read these.  The letters showed a young man who was extremely homesick and who had found a new appreciation for his parents and all that he had left behind at home.  Life seemed a lot more precious to him while he was there.

My husband William Patrick took this photo yesterday while driving around Tampa running errands.  He thought it was cool and it certainly is.  But to me it also provokes a strong emotion of missing someone and hanging on with all of your might.  It exemplifies the American Spirit….

I am really good at tooting my own horn in my blog.  That is mainly what these online diaries are about.  However, I appreciate so much art from around the world that I enjoy featuring work that I love from time to time.

Today’s featured artist is Betty Cummings.  Betty is an American artist living in CO and FL.  She is well established in galleries and juried art shows, but new to online exhibition.  Her work is full of rich colors and delightful contrast.  She is a great painter and also happens to be my Mother In Law.  There is no shortage of art around my home and I am fortunate to have two original pieces from Betty proudly displayed in the entryway to my house.

Betty has this to say about her work:  “Close observation is a kind of daily meditation. I like to look at beautiful things: luminous flowers, the glitter of glass, opulent fabrics, a landscape lit just so.  I often exaggerate color and contrast in my paintings to try to give shape to what my inner eye is seeing. I often push the scale, also, to something beyond reality. Heightened color, bigger-than-life scale, dramatic lighting and high contrast are some of the tools I use.”

Being a novice to the online art world, you will not find a lot of her work on the Internet, but she has a website here:  http://bettycummings.com/  Feel free to contact her to discuss original commissioned paintings or just to let her know that you have enjoyed her work!

There is a certain kind of freedom in music that no other medium can mimic.  I love to paint and create artwork on the computer.  It opens my soul to all of the mystery and wonder of this world and there is no other way I would rather express myself.  However, my creativity does not happen in a quiet place.  I always have music playing.  Sometimes I want rock n’ roll.  Then there are times when only Classical will ignite my fire.  But the simplest of pleasures is a single guitar. The fluidity and resonance awakens the creative power inside of me and I am free!  There is no other freedom like it….let the music play!

The piece above titled “A Certain Kind Of Freedom” can be yours for a song (pun intended) for a few days…only a few available here:
