The beach days are almost over here in Florida.  It comes with mixed feelings.  There is the joy of cool crisp air and a chance to be outside on the trails.  But the damp cold of the sea is a bit too much.  I will miss it.  Until I return home…

Crayon and Letraset Transfers

Date: Unknown

FunkyFishClose

As I continue to go through my old portfolio, I am finding a few surprises along the way.  I found this guy hiding among the rubble.  He is clearly created with Crayons, and for those old enough to remember, Letraset transfers.

Long ago before the advent of home computers, there was a need for an easy way to apply perfect typography and texture to images.  Letraset made these plastic sheets with transfers on one side.  You then applied pressure with a tool, spoon, etc. on the other and it would stick to the surface of your project.  Back then, I thought it was the coolest thing ever!!

What a flashback….I should find my box of crayons. 😉

This will be my last Stone Rock’d fish for a long while!  Aren’t you glad?  It’s been awfully fishy around this blog and I’ve got a hankering to get my hands wet again in some acrylic paint.  This project has been fun and time consuming, but I’ve got some killer fish for my clients and for the rest of the World to enjoy too. 🙂

Happy Sunday everyone!

Flowers & Fish (They’re Connected!)

I am still working on fish and flowers.  Ever since 5th grade Science class, we all learned that everything is connected in the ecosystem.  We also know that rain makes flowers grow.  But did you know that fish also make them thrive?

According to a study by University of Florida’s ecologist Robert Holt, fish are integral in the life cycle of flowers.  It all starts around the pond where bees pollinate nearby flowers.  Dragonflies prey on bees and you guessed it:  Fish eat the dragonflies.  So less fish means more dragonflies which means less bees.  Less bees equals less pollination.  Without pollination the flowers do not survive.

So, while fish don’t actually pollinate flowers, they have a strong indirect influence in this environment. This doesn’t mean that fish in general influence the flower population worldwide, but it does suggest that waterside plants in certain ecosystems could be affected by a drop (or rise) in the fish population.

Very cool!

Not only have we been getting these little showers here in Florida, custom commission work has been pouring in as well. 🙂  As you can see below, I am still working hard on my fish for the big hotel project in Key West.  I am also creating special pieces for my collectors.  I spoke with a woman last night who lives in Hawaii.  She is commissioning a very sentimental piece to hang in her home that she shares with her partner. They are commemorating their lives together so far.  And my piece will signify their prayers that they would find each other before they met.  As always I am honored to be a part of so many people’s lives in such an intimate way.  And also grateful just to add beauty to the World.

Some of you might have noticed that I have not blogged about any new work lately and that I have been bringing back some older blogs that never got much attention.  The reason for both are two-fold.  First of all I am working on a bunch of new Stone Rock’d tropical fish for a HUGE hotel project in Key West, FL.  And secondly, when I first started my blog, I blogged about my most popular paintings at the time.  But with only 2 followers, no one ever saw them.  So I am giving all of my newest followers a chance to see these works too.

The piece above is titled “Tropical Fish 12” and is one of the many I have created that I am totally satisfied with.  I will be submitting it to the design firm with a few others in a few days.  I already know that the client loves my first piece as it has been paid for and is in production.  I am really excited about this project and know that they will love more of my work.  So busy I stay….

Swim along and see more below.

I got a little note from the Universe today which read, “You simply cannot know, Sharon What will make others happy.  But you can always know for yourself.  Go for it….The Universe”  That’s my reminder.  I have been working really hard painting custom work for others and creating pieces for my show that I’ve neglected what makes me happiest.  Like the picture above, I need some time for myself walking along my own creative beach.  There is such a freedom in just letting the energy from your soul release itself onto whatever canvas you choose.  So I am off to do just that today. 🙂

When I take photographs, I like to either find a story or have the piece ask a question. Palm trees are everywhere in Florida and there is no great mystery to them.  But this one was all alone and one of the tallest palms I have ever seen.  High into the clouds….what is happening below?  There could be lovers sitting and chatting.  A dog could be asleep.  A bike could be propped up against it’s trunk.  It could be right on the ocean or in a parking lot.  The vibrant blue sky reveals nothing.  What story do you see?
