What defines success? It’s a good question. So many see it as money/sales and fame. While I am really happy that my artwork sells, it isn’t the biggest part of how I define my accomplishments. It’s actually quite small…
I thought today would be a good day to remind ourselves of all of the “good” in our lives and what truly makes us a success. It’s a simple little exercise that might take some thought, but surely success can be found in even the smallest of things…
I am a success because: in my life, the people around me have always underestimated me. When they said “you can’t do it”, I always did. Whether it was mucking horse stalls in Florida’s Summer heat, defeating cancer naturally 15 years ago or selling my art and earning a living with it. When they said “no way”. I’ve done it!

In a calm moment before a storm broke out on Siesta Key Beach, I look up and down the coastline and spot a lone woman walking slowly beside the waves. Her dress catches my eye immediately. The bright red in direct contrast to the darkening surroundings. She carries her matching shoes in one hand. She appeared completely unconcerned by the ominous clouds forming overhead. What was she thinking about? A lost lover…..her career choices….the baby she gave up for adoption….her next novel….I will never know, but I find this image incredibly seductive with so many possibilities…..

“Comfort”
Screen print from etched acrylic and ink.
Sharon Cummings
Circa 1992
This piece is definitely a one off by me. It started as an etching on a hard acrylic sheet that was then inked and pressed on a screen press. I remember the acrylic being very difficult to scratch into. I still have the block and the original sketch to this piece. A rare find…

I think one of the hardest things to do in life is to make peace with our pasts. So many of us let memories, words and actions from years ago punish us in the present moment. For me it had to do with forgiving each person who offended me. I had to let go of resentments. Then I had to forgive myself for all of the things I had done to hurt others including me. I wrote letters to a few people. Some I sent in the mail and others I simply burned afterwards. As I realized that I had made a lot of mistakes it helped me to allow others to do the same. I also made a conscious effort to not repeat the behaviors and actions that I had been taught. I became attuned to my feelings and learned to stop the patterns. And a huge realization for me was that I could not control other people or make them change. And I got some professional help. It’s all been worth it as at this time I am able to look back and focus on the good things….the pleasures…..the peace.
