“The Dreaming Tree”

Mixed Media Art

Sharon Cummings

2014

I’ve always had a special place to go to dream.  For most of my life, it’s been a special tree.  Everywhere I’ve lived, I had to find one.  I would either climb up into it’s branches or swing from a rope/tire.  Now, I just sit under it’s cooling shade and let myself go….

Today I am taking my daughter and one of her friends shopping.  They love to shop for clothes and accessories, but what teen-aged girl doesn’t?  Ok me at that age.  I am not much of a shopper and never have been.  I have been told many times that I shop like a man.  You know the stereotypical male shopper right?  He knows what he needs, goes in and gets it and leaves.  If that is manly shopping then I must agree.  I shop like a man.

Now it’s a totally different story if you drop me into an art supply store.  I will look at every single item, take off caps, smell things, etc. Papers must be felt with my hands for textural nuances.  Price comparisons for canvas must be made.  And look at all of those colors of paint!  Every brush has to be pressed against my skin to determine it’s value.  I can spend hours immersed in art supplies.  So in this one way I am truly a “shopaholic”.

But today it is all giggles, lip-gloss and possibly neon tennis shoes. 😉  The only thing that makes the shopping part bearable for me is the fact that these ladies love a good bargain, so we will be hitting consignment shops and Goodwills.  You never know what you will find in those places. 🙂

I’ve always had a goal or two in my mind.  Over the years my visualizations have changed, but one thing has stayed constant.  I’ve ALWAYS dreamed. Dreaming plays an important role in our lives.  It helps us cope with the stresses of life by taking us to places that are safe and comfortable.  It gives our brain a much needed rest.  Whether it is while you sleep or while you are wide awake, a dream is a sanctuary.  It also helps the good in life materialize. Thoughts become things.  So the more you focus on positive dreams, the more beautiful your life’s illusion will be.  Row row row your boat….life is but a dream……

I will be busy this week with family and Thanksgiving festivities….went down south today to spend some time with relatives who flew in from Colorado….It was a little chilly for a beach day, but this little girl was determined to enjoy herself.  She was so caught up in the simple joy of digging in the sand when her parents graciously let me take a few quick snaps….aaaahhhhh I remember….

AloneTimeFBSometimes you have to take a new look at an old piece and see a better way to present it.  This one has languished in my portfolio long enough.  It was good, but not great.  I took this photograph a few years ago while on vacation with my husband in Sarasota, Florida.  It was high tourist season and the beaches were filled with screaming children, lobster people and old folks slathered in sunscreen. As we walked the shore after dinner, there was this one magic moment.  A little girl playing in the sand all alone.  She was not playing with any of the other children nearby.  Mom and Dad watched from a safe distance and it just struck me that she looked so happy.  Completely oblivious to her surroundings…totally absorbed in the pleasure of the beach sand….she had “Perfect Company”.

Who do you confide in?  We all have parts of ourselves that are secret.  There may be that rare individual that comes into our lives that we feel comfortable enough with to be vulnerable and we share.  But for the most part we carry our experiences and feelings inside.  Trust is a big issue for most humans.  That is where dogs come in.  There is something about their unconditional love that allows us to love freely and without fear. We trust them.  This piece is all about that trust.  Showing secret places.  I Trust You….
