Ask most people if they are honest and they will say “yes” with absolute conviction.  We as a people like to think that we have integrity and morals.  In the larger picture, that may be true. After all the majority of the population obey the rules and stay out of jail.  We work hard and raise our children to be upstanding citizens.  We pay our taxes.  We live an honorable life.

But the truth is (pun intended) that we tell “little” lies all of the time.  We convince our little ones that there is this person called Santa Claus.  We tell our friends we have other plans when we just do not feel like going out to dinner with them.  We call in sick to work when what we really want is a day off.  And we tell our mate we had a salad for lunch when we really had a cheeseburger in order to avoid conflict.  And one of the biggest lies we all tell is that we are “fine” when someone asks how we are doing when we really feel horrible.  In fact, we are a lying culture because it is much more acceptable to be polite than sincere.

Where am I going with all of this?  I honestly do not know, except to explore just how complex our ethics really are.  We are taught that lying is wrong, but we are also taught that you shouldn’t hurt people.  The truth hurts sometimes….so we avoid it.  Because the lesser of two evils is to spare someone’s feelings.  Or is it to spare our own?  Conflict avoidance seems to be one of the biggest triggers for dishonesty.

In my own life, I try to avoid doing things that I would need to lie about to the people I love.  My child was also never subjected to the “stork” and Santa Claus was “The Christmas Spirit”.  But am I 100% honest?

My newest piece above titled “Honesty” is. 🙂

This piece was discovered while I was creating a colorful abstract painting.  I say “discovered” because often when I create, I simply apply the medium and and the work reveals itself.  Michelangelo said it best:  I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.  I will wash, blow and splatter everything away from the painting until I find it.  “Dark Swan” appeared to me and really spoke to my soul.  It is dark, but there is lightness there also.  Just like the soul…..

I have really been working hard lately.  I am not sure why but I have more creative energy than I have ever had.  So I will leave you with another Michelangelo quote which best describes what I do each day: If people knew how hard I worked to get my mastery, it wouldn’t seem so wonderful at all.

It has been said there are many roads but only one journey.  I have always liked that. Right now I feel as if I am on an odyssey with my artwork.  It is growing and expanding in directions that I never imagined it would.  I see no limits to what I can do.  I am also branching out from the traditional paint and list model.  I am really getting into my digital work and find it comes to me with ease and joy.  And best of all they are selling which gives me satisfaction in my work as well….I’ve got my creativity shoes on and will continue to see where this road takes me….

Have you ever had that sense that you were moving in the right direction?  That finally all of the pieces of the puzzle were coming together?  Things that didn’t make sense just a short while ago come with totally clarity and understanding now?  That is exactly where I am right now.  I’ve been cleaning negativity out of my life…people who were unhealthy for me…foods that weren’t serving my body…attitudes which brought me down.  Those are all going and I am moving forward.  Those changes are really making a difference as I see and feel all of my goals coming to fruition even more abundantly than I imagined. 🙂

Move in the right direction….
