In a calm moment before a storm broke out on Siesta Key Beach, I look up and down the coastline and spot a lone woman walking slowly beside the waves. Her dress catches my eye immediately. The bright red in direct contrast to the darkening surroundings. She carries her matching shoes in one hand. She appeared completely unconcerned by the ominous clouds forming overhead. What was she thinking about? A lost lover…..her career choices….the baby she gave up for adoption….her next novel….I will never know, but I find this image incredibly seductive with so many possibilities…..

Down by the sea…My art is inspired by the brightly colored shells and seaweed that wash up on the shores of Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida. The smell of brine and fish is a sweet perfume for my soul. I am renewed with the feel of sand between my toes and the sound of waves calling to my heart…

Here is my haul of fossils that I’ve collected walking up and down the beach for the past 4 months! I also have a glass jar that holds about 3000 shark’s teeth! Below you will find: prehistoric shark’s vertebrae, a camel ankle bone, whale ear bone, turtle shell fossils, three toed horse teeth, shark’s teeth of many kinds, puffer fish mouth plates, stingray barbs, shells and misc. bones. I find these glimpses into the past absolutely fascinating!
A few years ago I had a collector ask me to make a painting for him including some of his fossilized dinosaur bones. It’s got me thinking about what to do with mine…

It’s beach weather again. In Florida we really do not get definitive season changes, except in the Spring. Fall comes and goes without any fanfare. Winter just brings some cooler days. Summer is just hot. But sometime in March everything comes alive with color! The oaks are almost fluorescent green! Bougainvilleas and azaleas burst in dots and cascades in shades of fuchsia in every yard. And by the ocean….the sweet beautiful sea….The sea grape leaves turn many shades of red, orange and yellow. It’s a happy time for this color junkie. 🙂

It’s hump day again! And there is no need to be “crabby”! Sure life can be a real beach, but you can collect my work and get happy for a lot less than you think! Get a gorgeous 8×10 of my “Colorful Crab” for less than 25.00 clams and that includes S/H!

Is it beach weather yet? Unfortunately….no. It’s been dipping into the 30’s and 40’s lately and the wind has been making it feel even colder. These are the last images I have taken of my beloved Caspersen beach in Venice, FL. It calls to me, but I must wait…

The Urban Dictionary describes zen as a total state of focus that incorporates a total togetherness of body and mind. Zen is a way of being. It also is a state of mind. Zen involves dropping illusion and seeing things without distortion created by your own thoughts.
I have been finding myself more and more in a zen like state lately. The air is salty and the water is cool. My hands search for the past through shells and rocks dredged from the earth beneath the sea. As fossils emerge, work fades to the background. Pain and sorrow recedes with each wave. Joy replaces all emptiness and I become one with all there is. The path is becoming more clear…
