Enjoy this Summertime treat from my Mother-in-law Betty Cummings.  She was inspired by a walk along Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida.  She used bright colors in her oils to achieve this tropical look.  I am so fortunate to own some of her original work.  And now everyone can enjoy prints too!

When I was a little girl, I was fascinated with photography.  I had my little Kodak Ektra camera and I would take quick snaps everywhere I went.  The most exciting part of the process was always going to the drug store to pick up the developed photographs.  Back then there was no one hour photo.  It took about 5 days and the anticipation would drive me crazy!  I would constantly ask my Mom if they were ready yet.  Then I would revel at the surprise shot.  The one that wasn’t anticipated.  A casual shot that turned out to be a “wow”.  Today it isn’t much different.  I still take snaps wherever I go whenever something catches my eye.  And then when I get home, the anticipation of downloading them on my computer is the same as when I was young.  The only difference is now I wait mere minutes instead of days.  Recently I had a beach getaway where I took over 300 shots and this was the “surprise”…the “wow” shot….

Love is love.  As I fused this painting together I immediately saw hearts forming in several places, but it was only when I looked further that I saw that there were two beings holding a heart between them.  The two halves made one heart.  One love.  I particularly like that these two beautiful souls appear to not have gender, status or anything that makes them different from each other.  Just two people bonded in love.  Love is love…..

I have been talking an awful lot about myself lately and have decided that this week will be dedicated to others.  I want to share some amazing photographers with you.  First up are Charlie and Norma Brock of Avinger, TX.  I first had the pleasure of meeting these two through a support group for artists/photographers.  Not only are their images exceptional they are both just super nice people.  Their inner compassion shows through in their work.  I asked them the following questions so we can all learn more:

What inspires your works?  A passion to see things that others overlook…the beauty in ordinary or obscure things.

Which of your photographs is your favorite?  Reflections – a sunken boat filled with the reflection of a cloudy sky. It was taken near Clifden, County Galway, Ireland in 2007, during a fantastic holiday on the Emerald Isle.

Is there a photographer you relate to? And why?  none really. Charlie learned the mechanics from helping in his Dad’s studio, but quickly developed his own style and interests. Norma learned from Charlie, so he’s definitely her mentor and inspiration!

How long have you been taking photos?  Charlie- 50 years! Norma – 38 years. It’s unbelievable how much equipment has changed, yet the basic principals of good photography have stayed the same.

What’s the best thing about being a photographer?  Having 100’s of thousands of photographs to enjoy and share! Worst thing: Having 100’s of thousands of photographs to sort, edit, store and file! Never enough time!

Is there a purpose to your photography?  Capturing the adventure of life and making a permanent record of each splendid moment .

How do you feel when people interpret your photos differently?  When someone interprets our photos differently, we are delighted! Each picture is worth a 1000 words, and it’s great to learn what others see in the experience! Humbling and flattering at the same time.

What advice do you have for aspiring photographers?  Lighting is the single most important factor for a successful photo. Composition is 2nd most important, but be creative. Learn the rules, then break them a little bit!

You can see Charlie and Norma’s entire portfolio here.  Be prepared for a visual feast!

How We See Ourselves…

This is how the Internet World sees me.

This is how my friends see me.

And this is how I see myself.

Isn’t it always weird to hear your own voice on an answering machine?  We have a certain idea of how we sound and how we look.  I have had an Internet presence for many years, but started using my “flower” shot at the very top about 5 years ago.  It is how everyone online pictures me.  I have had people tell me it was cute, pretty and some have said erotic.  To me it is just an artsy picture to use for my business.  My friends would say I am fun loving with a big smile, full of laughter and open.  I am often told “I feel so comfortable with you”.  I am glad that my friends feel that way with me.  To me the middle photo looks “comfortable”.  The last picture is a self portrait taken about a year ago.  Of all of the pictures I am in and that I have ever seen of myself, it reflects how I see the real “me”…..an adult with a kid’s heart…..can you see the mischievousness?  😉

And this below is probably how I really look….LOL

Image

How do you see yourself?  Go through your photos and do as I have done…..it’s a pretty revealing exercise.
