I will be in Orlando, FL this Memorial Day weekend with my daughter enjoying fun food, pampering and relaxing at the Gaylord Resort. I work hard and rarely take time off, so I do not consider this indulgent or lucky (though to many it surely is).  But that is not what I am talking about.  What I am referring to in my title is the fact that my loved ones who have served in the military have always come home. My Grandfather saw combat in World War 2 and made it out alive.  My Dad served during the Korean War and also came back to the United States with his life and without injury.  Two of my uncles have served and they are still with us today.

So as we start this Memorial Holiday weekend with thoughts of BBQ’s and shopping, I am taking a moment to be silent and pray.  I am praying for all of the people out there who have not been as fortunate as I have.  Those that suffer the loss of the ones they loved who are now gone forever.  For so many it is not just a day off from work or a trip to the beach. And for me it is not a time to point fingers or judge governments either.  It is simply a time of remembrance and compassion….

Be safe this Memorial Day…

It must be really hard to watch someone you love go off to war.  Whether it is your parent, sibling or child, the fear must be pretty intense.  I only have one child and the worst I go through is waiting for her to get home at night when she is out with friends.  I am very blessed.

My Dad served in the Korean war long before I was born and while I never had to deal with that kind of sense of longing and worry, I know my grandparents sure did.  I had an opportunity to read some letters that my Dad sent them while he was deployed.  He was not a person of many words, so it was pretty special for me to get to read these.  The letters showed a young man who was extremely homesick and who had found a new appreciation for his parents and all that he had left behind at home.  Life seemed a lot more precious to him while he was there.

My husband William Patrick took this photo yesterday while driving around Tampa running errands.  He thought it was cool and it certainly is.  But to me it also provokes a strong emotion of missing someone and hanging on with all of your might.  It exemplifies the American Spirit….

My parents always taught me to never talk politics or religion in mixed company.  And I have found this to be sage advice as I lost some Facebook friends during the last political election.  This piece is up for interpretation.  Is it the face of good and evil?  Is it one face depicting the duality of the two faced politician?  Where did I get the idea?  Honestly, I have no clue.  Often artwork just forms in my hands as I look at or manipulate an image, paint or structure.  The end result is as much a surprise to me as it would be to anyone else.  We have always had a fascination with Abraham Lincoln as a country.  Good ol “Honest Abe”.  So I will not talk politics….I will let you do that. 🙂

The many faces of Abe:
