Don’t be afraid.  It’s only color.  I have to smile really big whenever I sell one of my bold mega colorful paintings.  It lets me know that someone out there has the assertiveness to go with a piece that yells from the walls, “Look at me!!!”  It is even more satisfying when it is an abstract.  Abstracts make most people uncomfortable.  Some will say that they just do not understand abstract art.  There is good news!  You do not have to.  You just have to like it and have the courage to allow yourself to enjoy it.  I do not understand how an opal is formed, but I know it’s beautiful.  I do not understand how a beetle has such iridescence in it’s shell, but I know it is stunning.  I do not understand how the human eye has all of those amazing patterns, but enjoy looking at them.  A lot of people like familiarity and stick to representational artwork.  But what so many do not realize is that the world has far more abstract imagery.  It just takes a closer look.  Have no fear!

All the ladies in France,

Don’t believe in underpants.

So they walk around town,

With their hineys hanging down.

As a kid we used to sing this little song that ended with all of us giggling at the thought.  I have no idea where this ditty came from, but I had the impression for many years that French ladies never wore panties!  Funny.

It is interesting what you “think” you know about a country that you have never visited or studied. I grew up on a horse ranch in Myakka City, Florida and we were not cultured or exposed to much outside of our little town.  It wasn’t until I moved away at 18 that I started to learn more about the real World.

As a youngster the French brought us french toast, ballet, french fries, armoires, croissants, brassieres and pie a la mode.  But they did not bring us panties!

Some interesting facts about France:

* There is a Victor Hugo street in every town in France.

* France produces over 400 types of cheese!

* Crayola is a French word that means “oily chalk”

* The number of times the French kiss each other as a form of greeting varies depending on region. In Corsica, the number of kisses can be as many as 5!

* Coco Chanel’s real name was Gabrielle Bonheur.

* The French had an early version of the internet called Minitel, where as long as 1984, they could pay bills and shop at home using the Minitel service.

* Paris nicknamed “city of lights,” lights actually refers to the number of intellectuals who live there

You never go back……..That’s what they say.  For me, that has been true when it comes to black dogs.  Great Danes in particular. When I was a little girl growing up in a dysfunctional home filled with abuse there was a constant in my life that brought me comfort. During the worst of times, I would dream of a big black dog that would soothe me and make me feel protected.  We never had Great Danes and we never had a black dog.  It wasn’t until I was in my early 30’s that I met my husband who had two of these gentle giants and one happened to be black.  It took her awhile because she had been abused too, but once she bonded to me we were thick as thieves….She lived to be 12 which is ancient for any large breed dog.  I believe she lived so long because she knew I needed her to help me heal.  And heal I did.  Ever since she passed, I’ve always wanted to have a black dog in my life.  We adopted another, but he passed too.  And now we have “Lumin”…..my third black Great Dane…..Nope I am not going back. 😉

I am going to be in an art show.  This doesn’t sound like big news as most would expect that an artist would be in art shows.  However, after 10 years as a professional artist this is my first show.  My career has not followed a traditional path due to certain physical disabilities that I have faced over those 10 years.  I’ve never made an issue out of them and I never wanted anyone to buy my artwork out of pity, so you will not see mention of any of it in my bio.  Even most of my friends never knew of my greatest issues as I suffered in silence.  Some learned of it as I had times where I could not avoid telling them because it was severe when I was with them.  Most of the time, I just found ways to cope so no one would know.  My two disabilities were severe gastrointestinal problems and vertigo, both of which kept me out of shows and a lot of other things in life.  I learned a few years ago that I had Celiac disease and I started eating gluten free.  It has taken awhile for my body to heal, but it has to a point where I am now confident to go out and spend a day with the public without worries of needing to go to the bathroom often or worse not being able to stand or walk.  It is not easy for me to share these things publicly, but now that they are in my past, I am o.k. with it.  I am just delighted to look toward the future with hope and joy!  I will post an invitation a week before the show, but it is the 5th Annual Arts In The Park in Ybor City here in Tampa on December 14th from 9 – 4.  It is a juried show and I am delighted to have been chosen!  Stay tuned!

It has been said there are many roads but only one journey.  I have always liked that. Right now I feel as if I am on an odyssey with my artwork.  It is growing and expanding in directions that I never imagined it would.  I see no limits to what I can do.  I am also branching out from the traditional paint and list model.  I am really getting into my digital work and find it comes to me with ease and joy.  And best of all they are selling which gives me satisfaction in my work as well….I’ve got my creativity shoes on and will continue to see where this road takes me….

I am playing around in “space” again.  I love the abstract nature of our Universe and I am always amazed and inspired by the imagery sent back to us from NASA.  This piece depicts our Statue of Liberty with an active chaotic nebula as a foreground.  She stands through it all….

As Summer draws to an end and my busy season looms overhead, I sit here contemplating where my career has taken me and where I want it to go now.  I see some new artwork on the horizon as I want to do more with my Golden Brand paints and Yupo. But mostly I see myself continuing to develop my photography skills.  I want to integrate the two somehow….yes indeed a POSITIVE CHANGE is coming!

“Positive Change” has been one of my most asked for pieces as a print and until now they were not available.  Expertly digitally remastered and ready in HUGE sizes here:

Licensing…..every week or so, I get asked by some company to license my art work.  I have considered many, but up until now have declined.  Most outfits look unprofessional and perhaps a bit “fly by nightish”.  Some have contracts that are too restrictive which would cause me to loose control of the images they will be using.  Some have no real accountability for sales which leaves an artist open to being taken advantage of.   But yesterday I signed my first contract with http://www.posterservice.com/.  They have been in the industry for over 25 years and my work will be retailed in stores like Spencer’s gifts and College Bookstore’s.  They have chosen my guitars and I am excited for this opportunity to have more people exposed to my art!
