Growing up, my Mom always admonished me to “never feed the seagulls!”  For one thing they may poop on your head and for another they can become aggressive and come for food that you have not released from your hands yet. Then Alfred Hitchcock came out with the movie “The Birds” which further instilled the idea that these creatures were angry little monsters.  The truth is that I have been around these beauties of the beach my whole life and I have never been attacked.  Yes, I have fed them (shhhhh….don’t tell Mom!).  I find them to be shy and aloof most of the time.  To photograph them, you have to be quiet and move gently.  It is true that they will swarm for food, but that is just normal animal behavior.  In this photographic art piece I try to capture their beauty and gentleness.  These two look to be dancing.  While they may not be angry after all….they just might drop a bomb on you when you aren’t looking. 😉

It’s been a rough few weeks in our home, so yesterday we headed for Siesta Key Beach for some fun in the sun.  The day was gorgeous with big fluffy white clouds in a crystal blue backdrop.  It was hot, but the nice breeze coming in off of the ocean made it just lovely.  I was taken by all of the colorful umbrellas dotting the shoreline.  Children played happily in the sand.  The smell of coconut suntan lotion filled the air.  This was paradise!  Within 10 minutes of our arrival, it suddenly got dark.  The wind picked up and out of nowhere the heavens opened up!  The lifeguards were blowing horns, the rain was stinging our eyes and the wind was blowing miscellaneous bits of Summer everywhere.  The sea of humanity running for their lives was unbelievable.  There was no way to take a photo at that point as it was sheer chaos.  And the rain was heavy.  Lightening crackled everywhere.  This was seriously dangerous and we ran too!   Below is a quick snap I took right before the deluge.  A 5 minute wait in the car and it was a return to the picture you see above…..ahhhh Florida in the Summertime!

I have been drawing and painting fish for as long as I can remember.  Growing up and living in Florida has allowed me to see a variety of marine life up close and personal.  I have spent many hours at local beaches swimming and snorkeling.  For years my family lived next door to a fish market on Siesta Key in Sarasota.  Every day I would go over just to watch the fish swim in the huge aquarium they had on display.  I particularly loved to see the clown fish.  That burst of orange contrasting with the white and black is one of natures finest masterpieces.  Yesterday I was interviewed for a feature and one of the questions was:  What inspires my art?  And my answer was that it was an accumulation of my life’s imagery.  It’s no wonder my portfolio is filled with the ocean…
