“Love A Bull 2”

New Art Mixed Media Painting

Sharon Cummings

2014

For the career online artist, each day brings it’s share of bull.  All we really want to do is create.  There is an energy and freedom in the creative process that feeds our souls. Everything else is outside of our comfort zone.  We list and promote, but we’ve gotten used to that.  It’s the other stuff like Chinese sweat shops stealing our work including our names, so that when our collectors search they find us there.  Regular folks that take our work and put them on socks, t-shirts and mugs for their schools, business, etc.  The businesses that want to pay us pennies for our hard work.  Companies stealing patterns from your work for brush tools.  And the list goes on…

One could choose to focus on all of that crap and become depressed.  Or the choice can be to choose to love your job no matter what.  I have to make that choice every single day.  Still choosing L.O.V.E..

“Free Spirit”

New Art Mixed Media Painting on Fabric Fused Digitally.

Sharon Cummings

2014

I’ve always been a bit of a free spirit since the time I could walk, but today I am not talking about that personality trait.  When I was a little girl, I loved riding my bike. Being the younger of two girls, I always got the “hand me downs” from my sister.  So it was her old beat up economy cycle that I learned to ride on.

My older brother had a beautiful bike.  It was sleek and colorful and oh so enviable.  It was way too big for me and every time I tried to sit on it, that painful bar would get me right between the legs!  His was a “Free Spirit”.  It was red, white and blue.  I wanted one so badly.  Every Christmas it was all I would ask for.  One season went by and I got a play stove set and the next I got some barbies.  I just wasn’t into all of that girly stuff, but was thankful for the gifts anyway.

Then the day came!  It was the Christmas of my 7th year.  My parents had wrapped a few small gifts for me and placed them under the tree.  There was no huge wrapped gift, so I assumed that the bike wouldn’t come yet again.  We all opened our gifts and everyone was happy….well mostly happy.  I am sure I looked more than a little disappointed. Then my Mom and Dad started laughing and asked me what was wrong. I shrugged. My Dad then left for a few minutes and came wheeling in my new bike….oh boy!   She was a beauty.  I jumped on that long bright yellow banana seat and I rarely got off it!

Here is a picture of the bike I loved so much.  Time for a ride down memory lane!

As promised, I am sharing more of my work from my art school days.  I did not do much painting back then.  My degree slants toward the commercial side, so I used pencils, pens, and markers as my primary mediums.  One of the good things about schooling is that often you are challenged to try techniques that you would not have chosen otherwise.  My “Proud Lion” above is creating using what is called “stippling” and is referred to as pointillism in art terminology.

This was created nearly 25 years ago.  There was no computer help.  The entire piece was done by hand using an ink pen on white cardboard.  Many countless dots over and over again (including what looks like solid black) make up his shapes and shadows.  I had to “draw” him in my mind and couldn’t rely on printing out something I could dot over.  Nope.  It’s all handmade.  In the close up, you can see the irregularities in the dots which is a dead giveaway that no computer was involved.

I am not knocking computer work.  I use it all of the time now!  I am simply remembering the cramped hands and cross eyes of yesteryear. 😉  I also appreciate the fact that nowadays you can make mistakes and quickly fix them.  Back then there were a lot of “do overs”.

Times have changed, but true art remains……timeless.
