When I was a little girl growing up in Myakka City, FL, there was a neighbor just down the road who raised peacocks. These creatures are surprisingly loud and when the wind was just right, our yard would be filled with their haunting cries. I would sometimes take the back pastures over to their farm. I had to go through a handful of barbed wire fences which is something I became an expert at. I would greet the cows being careful not to irritate any of the bulls. I would inevitably pick some wild flowers, but it was the sight of of those brilliant feathers I was after. The males with their jewel colored plumes always mesmerized me. Once in awhile I would get lucky and one of the fowl would have strayed close to the fence and lost a feather. This was the grand prize!

When I was a little girl in kindergarten, one of my earliest memories is my teacher asking all of us what we thought the moon was made of. I boldly exclaimed “Swiss cheese”!! And everyone started cracking up. It wasn’t because I thought that our lunar orb was a stinky hunk of fermented milk. I simply loved to make people laugh. Mission accomplished. 🙂
As I make my way around Casey Key, FL right now on foot, I have started collecting these interesting little rocks. Their shapes and holes remind me of Swiss cheese and I was taken back to my childhood and that warm feeling that comes from giving others delight.
I am not sure why these rocks have so many holes and impressions, but they are so interesting to look at and feel. The surface is so smooth. Our ocean is amazing….
Be back soon!

They say that sex sells. I am not sure who “they” are, but I can tell you that when it comes to my art it simply isn’t true. I mostly sell flowers, landscapes and animals. My sexy and/or edgy pieces take second seat. People rarely comment on them and even more rarely buy. I know it isn’t that the work is bad. It has to do with people’s insecurities and their fear of judgement. Not many art collectors are brave enough to have nudes displayed as focal points in their homes. There might be the charcoal drawing in the bedroom or maybe an abstract in a guest bathroom, but nothing that “shows” anything. Or even worse suggests anything sexual. As a society we are still very prudish when it comes to art which is odd since T.V. and media are filled with raunchy nasty nude imagery. Art is art. Be proud and display it!

Good ol’ Honest Abe. It is interesting how artists over the years have fixated on certain historic or iconic figures as subject for many creative pieces. I have a few that I come back to over and over again. Abraham Lincoln is one of them. Presidents who get assassinated seem to really “stick” with us, but that is not the allure. He was not a handsome man by any standards, but there is something about his eyes, nose and long face that just says “calm assertiveness”. And that is sexy! His features were very prominent and strong which also has appeal. Lots of contrast to work with. A perfect playground for an artist! I know when I watch movies, I am always most attracted to strong men with “presence” regardless of their looks….that is what Abe had….”A presence”…..And that alone is enough to get the temperature up a degree. 😉

I am creating new original paintings for my upcoming show. I do a lot more digital work these days, so it is a nice change to go back to more visceral creativity. I am recreating some of my pieces from 9 years ago, but with a different twist. Unfortunately the camera I had back then didn’t capture my work well enough for large prints. But these can go as large as 48×60! Now that is big and definitely “Standing Tall”! Happy Sunday all…..

Life is a funny thing. It is sort of like a huge ocean with many currents pulling you in varying directions. Sometimes you get into a bad current…an undertow that pulls you into places that do not nourish your soul. For me Ebay was such a place. I started my art career selling on the site. Don’t get me wrong, I love it when I want a cheap curling iron or collectible pez dispenser, but it is no place for me. I never felt good there. Luckily, life’s currents have also pulled me into good directions. I was able to move on from garage sale mentality many many years ago and see my value. I moved into a place of fulfillment in my work. I enjoy my collectors now in a way I never have before. I build personal relationships that last year after year. I make new friends too through the sales of my prints and originals. It feels so good to be in that upward flow into life. As I have been undergoing this revitalization I have also had to deal with loss. The loss of some friendships which were not healthy for me. Friendships that were laced in resentment. So today I am feeling a surge of vitality….a load let off my shoulders. A renewal! And speaking of revitalizing. Recently I discovered I was able to digitally remaster some of my very early works so that my collectors could collect super large prints of these paintings. I have always wished that I would have had a better camera back in the day as my photos of these are very small. But thank’s to Photoshop I can share them again to a new audience. Enjoy more here:

“Storm Flight” was one of the first paintings that I sold as a professional. That was over 10 years ago. I am delighted that I was able to revive it by digitally remastering the painting and then Stone Rock’ng it. Stone Rock’d Art is one of my copyright protected signature patterns. Yesterday I saw that someone found my blog by searching “Stone Rock’d Art How To Sharon Cummings”. Try it and I will pursue legally anyone who steals my copyright protected patterns. The patterns you see in this work are not computer generated. They were hand drawn and then hand sewn digitally to form their unique appearance. They are mine, but everyone can enjoy them here:
