Down by the sea…My art is inspired by the brightly colored shells and seaweed that wash up on the shores of Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida.  The smell of brine and fish is a sweet perfume for my soul.  I am renewed with the feel of sand between my toes and the sound of waves calling to my heart…Screen Shot 2016-05-03 at 7.44.59 AM

Here is my haul of fossils that I’ve collected walking up and down the beach for the past 4 months!  I also have a glass jar that holds about 3000 shark’s teeth!  Below you will find:  prehistoric shark’s vertebrae, a camel ankle bone, whale ear bone, turtle shell fossils, three toed horse teeth, shark’s teeth of many kinds, puffer fish mouth plates, stingray barbs, shells and misc. bones.  I find these glimpses into the past absolutely fascinating!

A few years ago I had a collector ask me to make a painting for him including some of his fossilized dinosaur bones.  It’s got me thinking about what to do with mine…

Is it beach weather yet?  Unfortunately….no.  It’s been dipping into the 30’s and 40’s lately and the wind has been making it feel even colder.  These are the last images I have taken of my beloved Caspersen beach in Venice, FL.  It calls to me, but I must wait…

Shark’s Tooth! A shark will lose a lot of teeth in it’s lifetime. But a fossil takes about 10,000 years to form. I’ve been inspired by all of the fossilized shark’s teeth I have found strolling along the shores of Caspersen Beach in Venice, FL. The picture below was my first try. I’ve got about 1000 teeth in a jar now. O.k. I will admit that it isn’t just strolling.  I’ve now built a homemade large sifter and am trying to figure out insulated wading pants for Winter! LOL Collecting shark’s teeth is addictive! It’s something I did for many hours a day as a kid. In fact, I wanted to be an archaeologist long before I ever considered art. 😉

Where Do You Go?

Where do you go when you are not working?  Do you retreat to a spare bedroom to mediate?  Do you hang out with friends over a few drinks?  Do you get away for the weekend to the mountains?  Do you head for the ocean?  Or are you like I used to be for the past 12 years, do you mostly work and not get away enough to make a noticeable difference?

I made a decision about 6 months ago that my health and spiritual being were more important than my work.  I am not my art.  My art is just a small part of who I am. So I now take long weekends and I commune with nature.  I swim in the sea, hike through the woods, bike ride along the waterways, hunt for sharks teeth along the shoreline, watch turtles and iguanas warm themselves at the park, see the sun set over the ocean and so much more!   I do not blog or promote my art during this time. I do not talk to clients on the phone.  I don’t even have a computer at my beach house.  And no T.V. either.  Imagine that?  For many years I couldn’t, and now I cannot imagine going back to that workaholic person I used to be….

Here is where I go…

The Moon Is Made Out of Swiss Cheese…

When I was a little girl in kindergarten, one of my earliest memories is my teacher asking all of us what we thought the moon was made of.  I boldly exclaimed “Swiss cheese”!!  And everyone started cracking up.  It wasn’t because I thought that our lunar orb was a stinky hunk of fermented milk.  I simply loved to make people laugh.  Mission accomplished. 🙂

As I make my way around Casey Key, FL right now on foot, I have started collecting these interesting little rocks.  Their shapes and holes remind me of Swiss cheese and I was taken back to my childhood and that warm feeling that comes from giving others delight.

I am not sure why these rocks have so many holes and impressions, but they are so interesting to look at and feel.  The surface is so smooth.  Our ocean is amazing….

Be back soon!
