I am a certified color junkie.  Ever since I can remember colors were never bright enough for me.  There were never enough in my environment to satisfy me.  The world was boring and I’ve always wanted more.  It’s why you just don’t see muted pastels in my art (or maybe you do).  I use the brightest and most vibrant colors I can find and mix, but you may not see all of them.  And now there may be a scientific explanation for my extreme color cravings.  An unknown number of women may perceive
millions of colors invisible to the rest of us.  These women have four cones in their eye for detecting colors.  The vast majority of people only have three.  I am not a scientist, so I will just post a link (some text in this blog is referenced from this article):

Scientists have dubbed these people tetrachromats.  An average human can
perceive a million different colors. But the tetrachromats see a hundred million colors, with each familiar hue fracturing into a hundred more subtle shades for which there are no names, no paint swatches.   Dr. Gabriele Jordan is one scientist who has been studying this phenomenon for years.  She estimates tetrachromats make up as many as 12 percent of women, but only a small percentage of these women actually use that fourth cone.

It is suspected that the natural world may not have enough variation in color for the brain to learn to use a fourth cone in those who have them. Tetrachromats might never need to draw on their full capacity. They may be trapped in a world tailored to those with three cones. Perhaps if these women regularly visited a lab where they had to learn to tell extremely subtle shades apart, they would awaken in themselves the latent abilities of their fourth cone. Then they could begin to see things they had never tried to see before, a kaleidoscope of colors beyond our imagining.

I bet you were surprised to see that as my title.  I am normally an upbeat energetic life loving artist.  I still am. But, I have problems just like everyone else.  I have health concerns, a teenager, animals in my care, a marriage, family struggles, financial worries sometimes and the list goes on.

I have learned by and large that there are two types of people on the Internet. Those who focus on all of life’s crap and negative things in the world.  And those that zero in on the good in people and the beauty of our world. Very few are in the middle.  I see the news.  I know about pain and suffering.  My life certainly has it’s share, but a long time ago, I decided that I wanted to be in the second camp.  The experts call this being an “optimist”.  I just call it self preservation.  I choose every single day to “live in the moment” and focus on positive energy.  This works for me and keeps me on a track that makes me happy on most days.  Not every day.  But most. I am satisfied with that. 🙂

If my artwork can take you away from your problems, even for a moment, that also brings me great joy!  And in that very life affirming feeling lies my purpose: to bring joy to the World.

What Makes You Vital?

There are several definitions for the word “vitality”.  My favorite is the capacity for the continuation of a meaningful or purposeful existence.  So the question is where does this “drive” come from?  For me it comes from several places. There is a pure satisfaction in creating artwork that I know will bring happiness to other people. That keeps me going.  But I also have a need to earn a living to pay my bills so I can eat.  The former gives my life purpose and the later is necessary for motivation. At 45 I feel more “vitality” now than I ever have.  It’s funny how in the first half of your life you have a lot of energy but less focus.

Enjoy my latest in my Transforming Energy series titled “Vitality”.

Eternal Light….Does It Exist?

When I created this piece for my new “Transforming Energy” series there was something about it’s glow that made me feel eternal and full of light.  So I named it “Eternal Light”.  This morning as I set out to write my blog, I did a little Googling and discovered that there is such a thing. A peak of eternal light (PEL) is a point on a body within the Solar System which is always in sunlight. Such a peak must have high altitude and be on a body with very small axial tilt. The existence of such peaks was first postulated by Beer and Mädler in 1837. The pair said of the lunar polar mountains, “…many of these peaks have (with the exception of eclipses caused by the Earth) eternal sunshine. (taken from Wikipedia.)

So there are places in our solar system that have sunshine constantly.  Eternal Light.  How cool is that!

“Storm Flight” was one of the first paintings that I sold as a professional.  That was over 10 years ago.  I am delighted that I was able to revive it by digitally remastering the painting and then Stone Rock’ng it.  Stone Rock’d Art is one of my copyright protected signature patterns.  Yesterday I saw that someone found my blog by searching “Stone Rock’d Art How To Sharon Cummings”.  Try it and I will pursue legally anyone who steals my copyright protected patterns.  The patterns you see in this work are not computer generated.  They were hand drawn and then hand sewn digitally to form their unique appearance.  They are mine, but everyone can enjoy them here:
