Because it’s Tuesday…Something a little different! I love shapes and there is nothing more shapely than the female body. I’ve combined her with my Labor of Love pattern for a truly unique nude.

There are times in my very adult world of career, parenting and home ownership when I just have to let loose. A time to get in touch with my inner child and see that she gets adequate play time.  Painting commission work and new pieces is quite rewarding, but there is still a “work” element to it.  Listing and marketing my art is definitely a full-time job!  But there is silliness when I allow it.  Letting go!  It’s like being a kid again with big smiles and jumbo crayons.  Yes, I still finger paint too!  Whether you are an artist or not, it is good to go back in time for awhile…..When was the last time you played marbles?

“The Dreaming Tree”

Mixed Media Art

2014

I’ve always had a special place to go to dream.  For most of my life, it’s been a special tree.  Everywhere I’ve lived, I had to find one.  I would either climb up into it’s branches or swing from a rope/tire.  Now, I just sit under it’s cooling shade and let myself go….

Enjoy this Summertime treat from my Mother-in-law Betty Cummings.  She was inspired by a walk along Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, Florida.  She used bright colors in her oils to achieve this tropical look.  I am so fortunate to own some of her original work.  And now everyone can enjoy prints too!

ImageThe weather in Florida is really lovely right now.  It is not too hot yet.  I have been working really hard on commissioned paintings for the last two weeks and have been taking some much needed time off.  A nice stroll by some water…getting in touch with nature…..taking photographs with my husband. This is what a day off looks like for me captured in the art above titled “Summer Stroll In The Park”.  I absolutely love what I do when I am creating for myself or for a collector.  Art is my passion!  But even I need to take breaks now and again. 🙂

Define Beauty…Frida Fascination…

I’ve always had a fascination with Frida Kahlo. She was not a classic beauty by any means, but there is a depth and intensity to her portraits that draw me in and ask many questions. Is there beauty within or am I just seeing the pleasure side of pain. Frida suffered lifelong health problems. Many of her health problems were the result of a traffic accident she survived as a teenager. Recovering from her injuries isolated her from other people and this isolation influenced her art, many of which are self-portraits of one sort or another. Kahlo suggested, “I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.” She also stated, “I was born a bitch. I was born a painter.” Maybe I am attracted to bitches or painters or painters who are bitches. 😉 Or maybe I see a bit of myself in her as I know great physical pain and the obsession to create constantly…enough to drown it out. Whatever the reason….I see immense beauty in her face and her work. I know I am not alone in my fascination as she is one of my BEST sellers.

I have always enjoyed the female form for it’s interesting curves and shadows…at every turn there is a soft hill or burrow. In college I volunteered as a model for many figure drawing classes. I was always struck by how professional and non-sexual posing for a class was. Afterwards, many thanked me for my time and shook my hand. No one ever checked me out or came on to me.It was so very intriguing to walk around and see the many different ways that individual artists interpreted my body. Some making me Rubenesque while others took away my curves. Larger breasts. Smaller breasts. So many styles and creative minds.

“Vulnerable” is a very personal piece. A woman’s back has always seemed to me to be so very sensitive, tender and exposed. My Labor of Love pieces are one of my most recognizable and collected of my styles. It was a challenge to transform a painted medium onto the computer, but the results were fantastic. Sections of my Labor of Love arrangements hand sewn to form exquisite patterns. Stone Rock’d Art was born. She is on her way to becoming one of my best sellers…..feel her vulnerability.

SuspendedWideFB

“Suspended” is my favorite from this nude series.  I love the tension and mystery in the pose. Those are actually my legs, but I was not suspended. 😉 A photographer friend photographed me laying nude on the sideboard in my dining room.  I like to use myself or willing friends as models for my work as much as possible.  I had to round out my bottom for this piece of art because pressed against the hard wood left it looking a little flat. 😉 Can you feel the tension?
